Shorter PDK-S in the GT4 would win me over the long geared manual. Regular PDK not.
Agreed but only on the basis the PDK S option is sensible money I.e. up to say £2750. Any more and it is probably too expensive for most on a £65k car.

I can see the appeal of a manual gearbox in the GT4 - not a great fan of PDK for driver enjoyment/involvement.

But, surely, the Cayman will need PDK to compete in GT4 racing?

If Porsche do indeed release a pdk gt4 then all this talk of LOI and residuals will be out the window.

Don t get too excited.

The PDK option may of course only be available for the NEXT gen GT4 as AP said it will be available 'soon'.

Guess we will find out this week. coffee

Preuninger on manual vs automatic

The manual vs dual-clutch PDK auto’ debate rages on between not only Porsche customers and enthusiasts, but also within the company’s own GT division.“We thought about both with this car and I wouldn’t rule out a PDK version in the future,” says Preuninger.

“There is a 50/50 happiness split between the two choices. There is no wrong or right answer. But as a company we have to have both,” a comment that reveals any report on the death of the manual gearbox as being greatly exaggerated.

Preuninger continues: “It is all about taste and how you use it. PDK has the edge performance-wise, but for pure motoring enjoyment on a Sunday afternoon, even I like the manual better. It gives me more to do; this is what a GT is all about. But you also have to appreciate that people enjoy both and the advantages. Many people reacted to the manual in the 911 GT3, but in this car it is just not right to have a manual. Still, so many people wanted a manual gearbox… this car proves we have listened.”

Preuninger also points to the fact that the car, with a Nürburgring lap time of 7m40sec, is the fastest of its size and type, even without a PDK that would shave a few tenths off the lap. “We like to be manual,” he says, “ but we like better to be fastest. If we can be manual and fastest then great. If we’re put under pressure in the future, we’ll react accordingly."

There’s even new life put into this manual gearbox by Porsche making the throw even shorter and adding a ‘blipping assistant’, a sophisticated rev matching system that can be turned off if desired. Preuninger, a man who likes his sports cars pure, is enjoying the system and keeps it on most of the time.

That's a good summary. 2020 onwards, it will will PDK with turbo/hybrid, manual just will not fit into that low emission agenda.

Will be interesting to see if current GT4 finds a niche in future years for being manual and non turbo

So does this mean a GT4 Cup will be announced with PDK-S ??

Sounds like that could be the case as one other poster on Rennlist has been asked by their dealer if they want to place an order for Dec/Jan 2016 delivery.

On a separate issue - does anyone have the GT4 owners manual in PDF format that they could share? I have the tech service manual but not the owner manual.

I personally can't see that. Really can't. In fact I still think the 981.1 GT4 will only be manual. Happy to be proved wrong... but possibly would be tempted by the PDK-S banghead

I really hope Porsche don't do it though - I was actually quite proud of myself for going back to manual after being a PDK / SMG / DSG / Auto-whatever, convert.

I agree, if they give it the PDK-S, I'll have to jump ship. But I've been looking forward to the GT4 manual after more than 10 years of PDK, SMG, DCT, S-Tronic etc in performance cars (currently Cayman GTS with PDK). I would be quite surprised to see a PDK if you look at the interviews from the launch. The cost / time of having dual setups manual / PDK was deemed too high / long and with the limited production run they didn't want to make too many variants. And also, why ps off the really loyal customers who have been waiting first in line only to offer a PDK version a few months later?

I doubt it will happen, I think the announcement has much more to do with a Cup car and / or a racing series connected to it.

At the risk of reviving the braided hose mud-slinging match, it could be that both proponents were right depending on the driving context. Evo's Will Beaumont fitted them to his E30 BM and said there is no difference on road (but that maybe there would be if the whole brake system was higher quality) but with the higher temperatures developed on track the braided hoses dramatically reduce softening of the pedal.

Oh well now, this a bit of a furore. Are the flippers in a state of paranoia?

Another batch of GT4s with shorter ratios? Good God, is this what the enthusiasts craved and flippers feared?

Looking forward to the big revelation from 'Andy' P - GT4 Power For The People.

PS. I've had a few, but I want the best for the 'people'. Screw the non-enthuiasts.

i don't get your issue here. manual and PDK optional is the best of both worlds, no?
why are they screwing the enthusiast?

PDK is not right for the car, I doubt we will see a road PDK gt4 anyway and if we did the manual would go up in price,

PDK R and Spyders stick around and don't sell, it's not what people want.
