Why bother having a great engine in a road biased sportscar that revs to 7800rpm if you're going to make gearing on it so long you can only redline it in 2 gears without losing your licence here in the UK. That's what pees me off about 981 manual gearing (I'm not having a specific dig at the GT4)
Sure, i guess i am used to long geared pork, for me it's not a biggie. I see from another thread you are getting an R620, hats off ! I have driven their press car and it's mega, i mean properly mental and that vacuum sequential box, just mindblowing. Utterly ridiculous overkill for the road, but hey why not. Utterly mad thing, u are one brave mutherfooker, brilliant.sone said:
Anyone had an update on seat shortages, I was on for a October delivery but told by dealers delays are now likely because of seat shortages.
Any ideas people? Dealers communication skills aren't the best tbh!

I've heard the same they didn't have any information on how many weeks delay thoAny ideas people? Dealers communication skills aren't the best tbh!

Going back to the gearing (sorry!) I do find it surprising Porsche do not offer a shorter geared box at extra cost which would please some people, give more choice and also make them some more money.
The Porsche options list is quite extensive after all, adding this would seem sensible all round.
If it offered 80mph max in 3rd say, 110 in 4th would that be popular?

I assume the gearing is only the way it is to distance the GT4 from the 911?
Pretty much. GT4 would be too close to its more expensive brothers on paper if it had more reasonable gearing. The long gearing has allowed them to build a 385 PS car that's only 0.2 faster to 100 km/h than a 340 PS PDK GTS with significantly less torque.
Obviously a GT4 with long gearing and a 3.8 that's even rumoured to make 400 PS sells far better than a GT4 with reasonable gearing and a 3.8 throttled to 360 PS, even though I'd rather have the latter on the roads I drive on.

The long gearing is about the emissions test isn't it?The long gearing has allowed them to build a 385 PS car that's only 0.2 faster to 100 km/h than a 340 PS PDK GTS with significantly less torque.

Would a simple fix be to change the final drive? This would have the effect of reducing the speed in each gear, increasing acceleration and reducing the top speed. Or have I got this completely wrong as I'm not an engineer / race mechanic...BubblesNW said:

Correct, I believe there's an outfit in the US who will supply a shorter final drive, but I can't remember their name and it's a very new thing i.e. I've not heard of anyone doing it over here. It's something I would consider once my BGTS is out of warrantymollytherocker said:

I doubt it. GT4 has no start/stop, if they were at all worried about NEDC emissions they could likely have reached a better result with 10% shorter gearing and start/stop than the current gearing without start/stop.BubblesNW said:

You are correct, a reduced final drive ratio would reduce the overall speed in each gear. However, it currently does 3000rpm in 6th at 75mph, and I wouldn't want to change that. I am sure my 987.1cs and .2 spyder did something like 3500 revs at 75-80 mph and my. 986s was only about 3000rpm so I can't see 3500 being a problem.
There is a company that does a lower final ratio but only for racing which doesn't last long for road use.
Why can't you use an exiting porsche one?

Yup! Gonna use it loads on tracK Basically, my logic was to go the full mental with the 620 My mate has an R500D and was sending me links to those, R500Ks, R500 Evos, R400s etc etc, but I was determined to unleash the inner child in me even if it cost an extra £12K+ Plus I'm a lot heavier than he is so I need the extra power There'll be 4 of us with 400s/500s/620s when I get mine, so we're going to tray and plan a trip in the spring At some stage I'd like to build a road spec caterham myself (270S most likely), but that's quite a way away

Sounds amazing, but I'd then question whether the speed keeps pace with the sound turbofreeFLAT6 said:
Porsche should offer lower intermediate ratios 'for track use' as an option. Then they could quote acceleration figures for the standard box to keep 911 owners happy and make GT4 owners happy with the option.
Agreed. I think Lotus offer this on the Evora (or at least used to).Unfortunately they won't offer this so for those that feel it is a real issue it will be a question of keeping the warranty or an after market modification and the associated cost & risk with that.
For me personally I'll wait to see what it's like. I used my Cayman GTS as a daily driver and the long gearing helped make it a better car to commute in and didn't bother me that much when pressing on. However the GT4 won't be used as a daily so it will be interesting to see if this is a big issue or if the extra power & torque, plus the hightened setup of the car in general overcome that factor.
I guess the gearing 'issue' is only magnified because the car is pretty perfect there isn't anything else to detract from the experience, so it's nitpicking.
