Don't disagree, but you have to live for today, with cars that are best suited to today's overall environment - comfort, ease of driving, safety, toys, optics, competition etc
Actually, you dont have to do that at all.Don't disagree, but you have to live for today, with cars that are best suited to today's overall environment - comfort, ease of driving, safety, toys, optics, competition etc

lets not pretend that GT3 owners from present and yesteryear never specced custom interior options, they are some of the worst offenders, just do a search on google images.
Hokum: The 991 GTS ceramics appear to be 350MM all-round. If the 991GT3 brakes make it onto the GT4, it would be a very exciting development.

My dream car circa 250ps (but not more than 300), sub 1200kgs, rwd. hydraulic steering, 6 speed manual close ratio, lsd, decent but not overpowerful brakes, no electronic toys, simple aero, no more than 265 tyres... something like that, and yes I do like a/c.
I built something thats not too far away from that if you overlook the fact that I have much more power, more tyre, and probably more aero than you envisage. Carl_Docklands said:

hmm. if you build one from the configurator, you get shown the Gt3 PCCBs at 410mm, otherwise i agree, 350mm upgrades are not worth the 5,786 quid. 380mm probably a yes.Hokum: The 991 GTS ceramics appear to be 350MM all-round. & probably a lot of skill too to manage all that & get the best out of it.

If starting from scratch, then yes I'd agree. But if you already have an R, upgrading a std gen 1 Cayman to the same level as a CR is not an insignificant amount of cash, the interior would need a fair amount of work, PCM3 is expensive, seats are £6k each, the spider alloys are £2k each the GT3 doors are undoubtedly reassuringly expensive and a decent suspension set-up would be around £3k?
See i wouldnt bother with the same seats and rims as the r (if starting from scratch) and would go aftermarket anyway. Not sure what pcm does but if its just sat nav, dont need that or can fit a tablet into the slot if desperate for it.
Not sure what benefit you gain with gt3 doors so.just leave them and save the money.
But i guess that depends on.if you want to turn a standard into an r and then do the engine mods or go gen.1 and do your own project

No 6 speed 'box, but ticks all your other boxes. I drove one approximately 12 years ago. Those that haven't driven one bh about the handling balance being ruined by the extra weight of the 3.5 6 pot 260hp engine, but I can tell you here and now that's complete BS. The original 4 pot S14 engine isn't a lightweight unit, the six pot weighs an additional 45kgs IIRC.
Even though the one I drove was leggy, it was wonderful car, faster than a standard 964 RS across our bumpier roads, purely because of the long travel, compliant suspension (Alpina merely fitted their slightly wider trademark wheels and the front springs from the air conditioned E30 M3, nothing more)
Up until 18 months ago I toyed with idea of building one, but with E30 M3 prices going North, I wasn't convinced it was a cost effective exercise.
Lovely cars.

Like I said if you already have an R, then the list of stuff that you get as std (and won't change) is desirable In its own right. If choosing between upgrading a car from scratch or upgrading an R you have to buy first, then yes, it would make sense to start with a cheaper base model.Mermaid said:

Mermaid, I get it, I really do, I've driven PDKs, including on track, I accept it allows you more focus or cornering, braking etc.
But, I did not enjoy it anywhere near as much as the full strength version i.e. clutch, gearbox. I get MUCH more satisfaction using a manual box!
Unless you're racing, I don't give a toss about 0.2s to 60 or 2s round a track. Time is irrelevant on a track compared to driver satisfaction/enjoyment...
But, that's just me, if you love yours, then fair enough!

So basically a car nearly as far from the 991 gt3 as one could imagine then...? Gassing Station | Porsche General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
