The popularity argument doesnt hold water. wink

Are you saying the Macdonalds make the best food?

Personally, I'd vote for a vanilla 993...

Not classic 911, not modern take like 996. Just ugly.
Agreed
Probably 996's will be considered the ugliest by the majority and this is one of the reasons why they are worth 20p now. I've never really liked the 993 either especially the design around the window:

Had a 993 now got a 964 and for me the 964 is a better looking classic car.
Lots of online 964 fan groups.
I think the 993 has dropped off the 'wanted list' now

I don't think you you'll find McDonalds claiming anywhere that they make the 'best food,' which is pretty subjective in itself anyway.

Just talking facts here.

I wonder if sales of the 996 went up vs 993 because demand went up, or because production capacity was increased?

Some of you might not agree but i think the 996 is one of the best looking Porsches out there and the closest in looks to the early classic cars with it's sleek clean lines , i also believe it will be a classic in the very near future if it's not allready and prices will start to go up !
I had the use of a 991 for the weekend as a courtesy when mine went in for a service and although i loved it i still prefered the look of my 996 !

Majority of who/what? Porsche buyers? Porsche owners? Porsche forumistas, Motoring Media? Classic air cooled fans? 911 fans in particular? Porsche fans generally? Car fans in totality?

You make a big assumption. The majority of 911 fans may list the 996 as their least attractive version(an assumption) but it the wider sports car enthusiast market found it to be one of the most attractive interestingly. Speaking from a fact based perspective.

And if you can find a 996GT3 for 20p I'll buy it off you and make sure you make a good profit.

The 996 GT3 is whole different ball game for very good reasons!

I am sure you know this.

Agree with your point, but we are talking about ugly Porsches and the GT3 is still a 996 !

Yes it is, but there are some subtle differences, and not just the aerokit.

The lowered stance, increased camber and GT3 wheels make for a hard as nails look.

And of course the interior. Especially in CS trim.

Porsche also state in the 991 Megafactories programme on discovery that 'New lights introduced in 99 now the cars are worth nothing'

I love how 'subtle differences' (wheels and lowered suspension) completely transform the exact same car from the ugliest 911 of all time to one that has a presumably positive 'hard as nails look.'

What is really happening here, and it happens all the time, when early adapters champion something, the laggards arrive later in their masses and endorse it as well and perception about looks, build quality quality, image all transform magically.

Who has arrived later?

I have wanted a 996GT3 since I first read the first review! I very nearly bought one about 3 years ago and it is to my deep regret that I didnt.

Looks are subtle, although that is not why I want the car!

You said a GT3 is a whole different ball game. In terms of looks which is what this thread is about, it might be different in your head, but trust me, it's the same body as a standard Carrera. You can add bits and bobs or lower the suspension of a Carrera if you want that 'look,' but the cars are the same either way. Even the headlights are the same! Believe it or not.

You seem to be taking this way too personally, because you own one. It is a thread about how a car looks so is entirely subjective, no one is saying a 996 C2 is a bad car, some (including me) are not fans of the looks but like some of the other 996 derivatives (I like only the wide-body C4S, turbo and GT2). So what, its just a personal opinion.

Why not stop whining and just post your answer to the original question?

It always makes me laugh when people start banging on about how ugly the 996 is because of it's headlights (mainly), then in the same breath start declaring the 996 GT3 the next best thing to sliced bread & never mention the lights!

Make up your mind people, you can't have it both ways, that just ain't fair wink

Have to agree on this, the aircooled lovers (usually 993 owners for some reason) seem to hate the 996 because of it's looks and yet somehow love the 996 GT3.

If a 996 C2 tiptronic with a GT3 bodykit, GT3 wheels and lowered suspension can look identical to a GT3, how can a 996 C2 be ugly?

In profile the 996 and 997 look very similar, from the back they both look great and from the front it's only headlights ;-)

Saw a 993 targa on those disgusting mini sized split rims today. That is horrid from the sides and back, therefore from the above calculations, 100% worse than a 996 if you don't like the headlights i.e. 2 angles of ghastlyness rather than 1.
