Thats interesting--I thought the 993 was the best looking 911 of the lot. Tidy small, very pretty.

Chap near me has what looks like a late 80s 911 Speedster but with an unusual front, just has some rather small round headlamps with a rather flat front style bonnet.

Anyone know what that is?

The Strosek 911s are pretty subtle compared to some of their other offerings.

I agree completely, there is an element of purity in the 996 that is seen in the early long nose 911's. We all thought the 996 was boring and bland when it arrived following on from the 993 with all its lumps, bumps curves and spoilers etc. But in reality, Porsche had taken the new car back to basics, and the clean lines of the 996 have actually aged really gracefully. Yes they have their issues, but as the only affordable 911 for a lot of people now, I believe the 996's are yet to have their day. I also think that the early 2.5 and 2.7 boxster's will start to attract more attention in the next couple of years.

Disagree with all of this. I've owned a number of 911s throughout the years and the 997 was a step back more towards the 911 design roots. The GT-ification only started with the 991.

Agreed. The 997 was clearly a massive reversal from the questionable 996 design.

Early targa - just looks so crap compared with the coupe.
Again most cars can look good or bad depending on the colour/wheel combination.

Not classic 911, not modern take like 996. Just ugly.

I don't think that's a genuine 996 turbo: it has the ducts but it also has the full width rear reflector which was only on the C4S.

The 996 does take a bit of flack, and I'm not a big fan of the standard Carrera's looks, but I think a kitted 996.1 Carrera looks fantastic, and it was a 996 that got me into Porsche. I was never really into Porsche until I saw a black 996.1 GT3 in Stratford-upon-Avon in around 2001 and that was the start of my love-affair with Porsche.

I'm probably biased as I have a 996.1 but looking at those two pics I genuinely prefer the look of the .1
Prefer either over the 993, now to hide from the Porsche equivalent of the KKK, they'll be along to string me up any moment now...
