Hi All,

Since purchasing my 996, my brother has also indicated that he wants a Porsche too!

Seeing as he knows very little about cars, he has asked me to seek the knowledge before the search starts.

He initially said he likes the look and sytle of the Cayman, I think he looked at 2008 models on the internet.

So my questions, as this will be a everyday car and he would take it to work and back which is 50 mile round-trip per day:

1. If his budget is £15-£18k what would you purchase and why?
2. Which car has cheaper running costs (all in)?
3. Which car is easier to live with?
4. Parked outside all year but on a drive, anything to consider?
5. He might want an auto, as my sister-in-law is auto driver only, does this affect decision?
6. Anything else to consider?

I think the perfect car for him might be the manual 2.7 Cayman or possibly the auto....although the sister-in-law does have her own car.

No kids at the moment but who knows!!

So over to you all.

The 2.7 has the more reliable engine but you need to rev it to make it go.
They are a very versatile car in general and you would have no problem using it everyday or keeping it outside. Mine has lived in my driveway since I purchased it in 2010, and untill recently, I used to do a 65 mile daily round trip in it.
There's not much to choose between them when it comes to running costs (Porsche aren't cheap as you possibly know).

Thanks for feeback.

I was under the impression that the servicing, mpg, tyre, etc would be better on the 2.7 Cayman?

it is the "No kids yet" stament that will make the call, if he goes 996 then kids do not mean automatic sale.

Depends what he wants out of it, I'd wanted a 911 since I was knee high to a grasshopper so when the time came, I wasn't even remotely interested in Boxsters/Caymans, it had to be a 911.

Many people say they prefer the Cayman, I believe they are easier & more predictable to drive being mid engined rather than the 911 being rear engined.

I have two kids so my 996 is still a practical(ish) car, if I had a Cayman it wouldn't be used nearly as much.

Tyre prices and wear are possibly a factor as is mpg, albeit not a massive difference. Next to nothing in it when it comes to servicing especially at an independant. Depreciation on the Cayman is likely to be greater, but the earlier ones have started to level off now.
