What happens to my private reg?
Discussion
Cars get bought and sold all the time with pending plate changes, and I've never had any problem with any I've dealt with for me or my customers.
However, the advice to wait until you have the new V5C back from DVLA is correct really, and it doesn't take all that long. I reckon there's a good chance you'd have it back within 7 days going by recent experience of their turn around times (retentions are simpler than transfers, for obvious reasons).
You usually get the V5C first nowadays, with the MOT and V948 (authority to have number plates made) following the day after, or sometimes in the same post. You can put the new plates on as soon as the V5C arrives.
In the OP's circumstances I'd be inclined to suggest he suspends his advert, places the plate on retention and re-lists at a higher price once he's got the new V5C back again. If anyone who's already enquired is happy to leave a worthwhile deposit (£500 or more) and wait for the V5C before collecting then maybe hold the car for them.
You need a form V317 - the latest version (without space for tax disc details) can be downloaded from this page:

I have just done this over the last 2 weeks with one of my cars, few minutes to do the paper work, downloaded from online, and then about 10 days all told to get everything back V5, retention document and MOT with 'old' number' on. And £20 for new plates online.
I brought a 996 a couple of years ago with a private plate, DVLA 'promised' the seller over the phone that I could put another private plate over the top of his and he could then get it back - I waited for the go ahead from the seller and then put one of my plates on. As soon as I did he was told he'd lost his plate and it had disappeared back into the ether.
Never sell without first retaining and putting the old plates on.
When the other poster said the DVLA sites have closed down he meant that they no longer exist and everything is now done by post through Swansea.

Still got that car/plate combo?I wonder whether when you take your plate off the car it will revert to the original plate or this chap's lost one?
Usually the original plate is 'reserved' when the private reg is on, maybe this plate was 'reserved' too?
My car is just about to be put up for sale and I sent off my documents to the DVLA last Tuesday evening to put my registration onto retention and I got all the paperwork back this morning including the V5.
I've just changed over the insurance and changed the plates so its all done within 10 days.

AndrewEH1 - Sorry I can't work out that c+p of another post trick....
No I haven't and it didn't!
When I sold the 996 on I retained my plate and it reverted back to it original 'year plate'. I had hoped that the other chaps plate would 'reappear' but it didn't. I regular drive past the chaps house where I brought the 996 and have noted when he changes cars (M3 after the 996) and I have never seen his plate again.
Always swap them before you sell.
