New engine has only done 13k or so...
If it's had a new engine more recently (e.g post-2009), would this mean a later spec and less at risk of IMS / bore scoring???

£20k will just about get you into a 996 Turbo?

Otherwise a 997 would be the choice.
Not sure £20k would without £++k needing to be spent. £25k+ is more realistic, £30k if you want a manual with <80k

The days of the decent 996t fir 20k are long gone. They were undervalued and thats been corrected.

Starting at 25k now and rising....

I'm new to Porsche ownership but I'm yet to be stung on the 928 and I'm hoping the running costs think is an old myth (!!!): a full service, cambelt, water pump, radiator fan and bonnet cable was £1135 at a specialist, when you consider the amount of work and parts I think that's ok. And a friend of mine is having to shell out £1200+VAT for a new EGR valve on a four year old diesel Golf (not to mention the £80 diagnostic..,)

928s are pretty plug and play and it seems very tough

I've read some great suggestions, but this is what I'm after - something dependable, reliable and a bit fresher than the Box I've got just now.

If you want reliable and dependable I'd look a Gen 2 Boxster S or Gen 2 Cayman with a little haggling!

Can't comment on what sort of 996TT that you'd get for 20K's..... but having just acquired one of Henry-F's finest you would be hard pushed to find something better to put your money into!

Wait until you have bit more cash and buy a 996 turbo. You won't want another Porsche after driving one. Try all of them first then decide. You already have lovely Porsche so worth driving all of them.
Thats what I thought.... now have a 991 GT3... but definitely a +1 here loved my 996 turbo, was a brilliant package

wouldnt touch M96/M97 engines myself, a particular low point albeit understandable as it was their first attempt at watercooled.

Cayman 2.9 manual with small wheels for me. Lovely thing with ACCESSIBLE performance, not just 1 second squirts before entering pedestrian territory.

997.1 C2S if you want to spend the full £20k. I understand why people are put off by potential engine issues, but life's too short to not own a great car because of it

As expected, lots of compelling arguments presented for each of the cars in question. To summarise:

996 C4S - it's a 911 and has the rear seats; there's always the IMS.
997 - fresher than the 996; a bit more expensive to do properly, and again the IMS.
Box/Cayman 2.9 - DFI engine; hard to find in budget

The 996T did pique interest, however prices are solidifying and to get a decent one, I reckon you'd need £25-30k. If I had that amount of wedge to blow, I'd commit Pork heresy and get an Aston.

Will take the search steadily and do my best to get some wheel time in all three mentioned above. I reckon it will come down to an individual car or deal to sway me, if I'm honest.

the 2.9 is non-DFI - but the new architechure.

Unless you have a 10k warchest, personally Id get a Cayman 2.9 as I said. Piece of mind and there is alot to be said for a more base model which you can wring out more.

0-62 in 5.8 is hardly slow and the sound it makes is lovely.

Cheers for the correction - wasn't aware it wasn't DFI, but glad you understood my point anyway.

Off to the ads to investigate Cayman 2.9s...

I think thats a great idea.

I recently bought a Cayman R here in Norway, because of the credit crunch around the time the gen 2 was launched - there are very few manual 2.9s in Norway - so my search proved unsucccessful.

I ended up with an R but would have been just as happy with a 2.9, in many ways I think base is best and I would have saved 25k at least buying a 2.9 but they just dont excist here.

A Base 2.9 with small wheels and manual is in many ways the closest you can get to a classic 911 but with modern reliability and comfort.

For me, the 911 is just too big and too removed from the asphalt ( hehe ) - Cayman is where it is for me.
