997.2 Fuel Economy

Hi All,
Been running my 997.2 2S for about 6 weeks now, and apart from some swift driving initially, I've settled down to day to day mooching around.
I though it was drinking fuel, and when I looked at the trip computer (overall view) it's averaging 17.2mpg !!! I reset the meters a month ago (after I stopped hammering it) so I'm stumped as to why it's so low. 90% of the time I haven't even got the Sport button on.
It's a 2009 PDK with 60k on the clock and was last serviced in March 2014 at 53k.
Anyone got any thoughts as to why it's so so bad. I got the same from a 4.7 V8 Aston, and I was defo expecting to get in the 20's from the Porsche.
Just to confirm i'm talking about UK MPG here too.

You should be getting much, much better than that.
I used to get around 35mpg on a motorway cruise, and a combined figure of around 24mpg with some spirited driving. Lowest I ever saw was 10mpg on track, but since it didn't go any lower (and it wasn't for lack of trying), I guess that's just the lowest it'll display.
Even meandering around with sport mode on and in manual, I'd struggle to get less than 20mpg.

Obviously it will depend on a number of factors, temperature, distance travelled, traffic, etc.
Have you checked the tyre pressures?
What fuel are you using? i.e. if you have just purchased it, has the OPC used 95Ron to save cash?
If its general urban driving then I on average achieve between 18 > 22mpg in mine....using Tesco Momentum. A general £70 > £80 full tank fill up will get you between 200 > 300 miles, averaging 250 miles.
A decent run out can be as high as upper 20's, even low 30's but an AVERAGE of mid 20's is a little ambitious IMHO.

OP it's too high. I've just checked my 56k mile, 997.2 Targa 4S (so heavier than yours) PDK: over 120 hours, 3600 miles, 31MPH av. speed it's returned 22.7MPG.
When I first got mine it had Bridgestone Potenzas fitted and I could ring out 31.5MPG on a 2 hour, mainly motorway trip.
Since switching to Michelin PS2s I can barely get 29MPG on the same trip.
What tyres do you have? If it's cold near you, check the pressures. My 4S has 2.3bar in the front and 2.5bar in the rear when cold.
Have also found that 10MPG is the lowest the gauge will go on track... Shame.
Let us know about the type of tyre and cold pressures.

I have had mine for 30,000 miles and average 26mpg; on a careful run (very rare) 34mpg using the trip computer for miles and the pump measure for fuel use (ie not relying on the trip estimate in the car). I rarely see under 20mpg. clearly the traffic density, stop start make a big difference as of course does the amount of spirited driving. 17 mpg is wrong- what colour is the inside of the exhaust? Ideally it should be light brown - if it is very black that suggests it is running too rich.

My old C2 PDK averaged 23.1mpg over 27,000 miles. 50% in town, 50% motorway. On a run it'd average between 30 and 32, with my record being 33.9 on a tank.
Most tanks were 17-18mpg, so if you're driving is mostly around town, with a little a road/motorway work, then it sounds about right.
My 991 c2S pdk seems to be almost identical fuel economy wise best of 33.9, worst of 16.7, mostly in the 17-18 range with a few 30+ tanks dragging the overall average up.
Fuel bills of around £2.5k a year for 10,000 miles, so around £1k a year more than running a diesel, or 2-300 a year more than in the wifes GTI.
In the overall cost of ownership, it's hardly a biggy at 25p/mile when the other running costs are around 75p/mile.

Well after visiting the OPC they checked it and said nothing seems odd, although they did recommend I run it until empty then fill it with decent Super and run a manual test (as a few of you on here have also said), so that's the plan.
For the record, my time at OPC Silverstone today was good, very friendly and professional plus kept me in tea and biscuits for 3 hours. Didn't try to sell me anything, in fact they gave me an advisory on a couple of things, then promptly told me they do not need fixing at the moment, and that they wouldn't have any impact on my warranty renewal in March either (they wouldn't refuse to issue a warranty due to them), can't say fairer than that.
