Hmm?

I'm sorry to say that in my book a W/C 911's (save the RS's, GT2's etc) are like a washing machine.

Or a modern VW,Audi,BMW etc. They get you from A to B but have lost the very essence of what Porsche is all about. They are probably going in the bin when their time comes!

The A/C stuff are an anachronism. They offer a visceral drive which a certain type of dude really "gets". Much like an old sports Rolex. Yes a new watch can keep better time but that's not the whole story.

We all have our favourites. Mine's the last of the torsion bars. The last "real" 911. No PAS, traction, no ABS, no tip option, no 4wd option. I'm not going down the 915 vs G50 road but the G50 'box is sooooo sweet and the shift almost rifle-bolt. The steering is sublime. The brakes superb with no play at the pedal and very progressive.

All A/C have that fan whine which negates the need for a radio! They are nimble and the performance is urgent. 231 brake is ample.

The quality is beyond superb. Everything works with German teutonic efficiency. They are a simple machine from the 60's and I even like the odd ergonomics.

I especially like the heater control which reminds me of a 70's German cooker knob!

You can't beat Fuch's either. A classic wheel which are simply perfect on any 911 up to '89.

Each to their own but it took me a good while to find my Granite Green G50 which I intend to keep forever. I adore it and there is no better "all rounder" classic car.

The market woke up. Familiarity bred contempt but they are the zenith and that includes Ferrari.

Try getting in a '88 328 and driving flat out on das autobhan max revs. It will grenade after not too long a time. The A/C 911 is hewn from granite (no pun intended) and delivers it all.

Here's mine!!

What a brilliant post and UTTERLY BEAUTIFUL CAR

Wow - that is a lovely collection - I know the black and cream 70's cars are super lovely , but the Orange one is simply stunning - is it blood orange / what's with the back wheels ? Please can you let me know a little more about them . Also the photo of the black 2.4S - looks like it's taken in front of a Porsche's Aladdin cave - where was it - what's the story ?? Cheers smile

Edited by RSVP911 on Monday 12th January 20:21
thanks mate . The orange car is a tuthil fettled fia s/t . Its wearing the period correct fuchs at the front and minilites on the rear .
She is around 900kg and 240 hp ,runs mini 6 pot callipers , exe tc dampers , trick tuthil gearbox and diff , pedal box , extended gear stick , brake bias switch , tuthil gearbox and chassis mods , centre fill tank etc etc . ended up too good a restoration so we put carpets in it and it is remarkably civilised (ish).

The black car is photographed at Aladins very cave , its been restored there .

Unfortunately there are insults on this thread meant seriously, such as:

I liken a 996 to a 924....

Look at this - http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

A 996 photo thread. Guess what? Nobody has mentioned that their car is better than anyone elses. Everyone just gets along.

Wouldn't that be nice.

On topic, the Singer is my favourite looking version of an air-cooled car even though it isn't original.

The 964 3.6 Turbo (Bad Boys) and 930 are currently my favourite looking original cars

I am really interested in your favourite of the air cooled cars. Probably hard to hold yourself to one but what would be the top three and why?

Also is the Singer the ultimate air cooled as Rob thinks it is? What are your thoughts on it?
First of all I love the Singer but for me its not the ultimate 911 but its very very good .

your question is impossible to answer , I've REALLY given it thought .
The thing is all 911 air cooled cars can be made so good . They can ( with a few mods , removing weight , adding mod cons etc depending on your needs ) be made just perfect for the owner .

I can tell you my personal favourites that I own but the reasons are not necessary because they are the best if you get my drift .

in 3rd place is my 964 RS its just so good , punches so far above its weight on track and road . Also it took me so very very long to find one that it has a special place in my heart for ever . Another plus is that it belonged to just the finest gentleman one could ever hope to do business with , the whole experience has been a real pleasure .

second for me is THE ICON , the 1973 Carrera RS . A dream since childhood and if I am honest I never though id ever even sit in one let alone be lucky enough to own such a fantastic example . A great car known to my dear friend Neil Bainbridge for many years . It is just magic to drive , track or road and the noise is to die for . These things must have been like flying saucers back in 73

My favourite , I still cannot believe I am current custodian of , by far and away number one in my personal chart ever , of all marques and values Is very special to me indeed . It was utter fluke , the car was sold and it was during a terrible period in my life when I was dealing with serious family illnesses . I was talking to Michael Roock about the car constantly , even though it was sold , I must have driven him crazy . Then a friend of mine visited him ( on unrelated business) and mr Roock mentioned off hand remark that the buyer still hadn't paid a deposit and he was not answering e mails etc etc
My friend told him that he knew someone that would sell his soul for that car , when they went into detail and mr Roock discovered it was me he laughed and laughed . They called me and I did the deal over the phone , I swear what happens next is true . When they put the phone down to me his wife came in with the office phone and said the buyer was on the phone and was ready to do the deal . My friend says you could hear a pin drop …
Herr Roock took the phone and apologised to the other guy saying he had waited more than a month and the car was sold ! I had it .
My friend called me immediately to tell me what had happened and then I realised with that gut sinking feeling that I didn't have any money . Shocked , he bought it no questions asked and I was able to pay him back later .

It is my 1973 Brumos Carrera RSR . Of all the cars on earth If I could choose one it would have been this car > i have always been fascinated by Brumos and this car and the beautiful yellow number 59 are in my opinion the best 73 RSRs on earth . I have letters from Porsche , Jurgen Barth , the FIA and brumos themselves . I have documents from Peter `gregg to hector rebaque , Original invoice , race history , photos , you name it . I have become friendly with Brumos ( who will run the car for me at Daytona and Sebring hopefully this year ) Michael Roock , Jurgen Barth etc , people I still look at with awe . Hurley Haywood drive her in Mexico and I'm hoping to get him to do a stint in her at Daytona , it really is the stuff of dreams and I still can't believe it . Its a life affirming experience , the first time I saw her I went absolutely mental . Ill never forget the look on Mrs Roocks face , she was crying with laughter . I may have even struggled to hold back a tear or two but I cannot confirm or deny that .
I plan to keep her for as long as possible and race her as she was intended , she doesn't deserve to be chained in a dark cave to live out the rest of her life in slavery . She was born to and will again experience the thrill of combat . Thats all I can do until I must pass her on to her next custodian , I assure you I will vet them thoroughly and if I even SMELL an oxygen tent they cannot have her .

Here she is at spa , just before I was thrown off ( 137 DB !!!!!!on megaphones )

and this is her history :

But I think the real winner for me is the Air cooled 911 , because any single one can be made better to drive than any of the above with some time , effort and money . The ability to modify the cars is the true beauty and if you don't need race series certification of FIA papers someone with a modicum of mechanical knowledge can do most of the work themselves ( weigh removal , dampers etc ).
The ones I chose were more for sentimental reasons , specifically applicable to me .

wtdoom , I keep thinking about this car thinking I've seen it somewhere - it's been really bothering me - then I remembered I have a picture of it (or so I thought) in my "Porsches I'd Love to Own" file stored on my Mac - it is a select collection of a few cars that I have seen and loved over the years - turns out the one I saw in the metal last year was a different one - a copy I assume ? Shame, I thought I'd spent a good 10 minutes drooling over your favourite car smile
