My story doesn't even get close to wtdoom's but it does end with my owning an AC so perhaps it's worthy of sharing.
I'd wanted a impact bumper 911 since I was a boy and more particularly since my uncle who when I was 14 worked on the oil rigs in Brazil came to my house in a blue SC coupe. I couldn't believe that someone in my family could own such an exotic car, and to do this day I still remember opening that stiff door handle and clipping my finger causing a blood blister and thinking 'it's in me', as if possessed by this german magic. Ever since that date I wanted one with all my heart.
Fast-forward to 2009 and a new job and a starting bonus payment, meant I had a budget of £11,000 to buy one. Off to Portiacraft I went to look at a black targa carerra 32 - lovely car though it was, parked next to it was this squat frog-like 88' white turbo for twice the money. I couldn't take my eyes off her. Harry offered me a test drive and that boost - unbelievable, I was in a trance. Before I knew what I'd done I'd put down a £2,000 deposit on my credit card. I remember driving away in the family BMW estate, with two kid's seats in the back howling with the sheer lunacy of blowing all that money on a car I'd only laid eyes on an hour before and hadn't even had inspected and also knowing that I'd have to sell the family car to fund it and drive my kids and family around in a 930 - our new daily.
When I went back to pick it up, I also realised that at 6ft 5in I didn't even fit properly in the car, but I'd been too amazed by my test drive to notice my head jammed in under the headlining!
Since then I've put on 34,000 miles, driven her to work through London to work every day for two years, parking her on the street in Harlesden for 3 years (not the greatest area in London), driven the whole family down to our summer holiday in Spain, driven back from a stag do in Mull - 532 miles in a day, been to CLM, raced to Goodwood in a convoy with a 355, 328, 80s M3 and a brand new Aston Martin Rapide, had the engine rebuilt, turbo refurbed, suspension refurbed, kidney bowls, 6 sets of tyres, spun it 360 degrees coming off a roundabout onto a diesel slick - new pants the only damage and had more fun than I thought possible in a tiny, smelly, noisy, harsh riding, no heating, crazy boostmobile - I love it!
And here she is after a quick burn down to the west country

I think the prettiest nimble porsche prototype, the first car porsche used a windtunnel in the design of,makes the 917 seem like a ugly thug.!

Small world : Neil did my pre purchase inspection on my 2.7 RS (ish) - he seemed a charming man who really knows his Porsches - spotted a pulled stud which was the source of a leak that I got fixed after purchase - certainly saved me a few quid - so big shout out for that !
Neil's the best , top man is our Neil . Yellow491 said:
Its recently changed hands again, nice car.You can be forgiven, even most of the experts get them wrong!
Come up to the rs track day,we can give you a sample of what can be done in these old timers.
Doom all these 2.8 should be road registered, interesting to see a lolipop in one and a lwt seat in the other in your photo.

Hunter, just because you big guys cant get in a 906,you need to be under 65 kg to fit,and a short trimmed beard, big hairy balls are allowed though!!
Mermaid, porsche also made other nice air cooled cars, they also made some great air and watercooled cars, where Do they fit in ,no mans land ha ha!
Doom all the 2.8 rsr should get together sometime, there are 9 in the uk now.
I agree we should have an rsr gathering ! I can arrange 3 but don't know the others unfortunately .Mermaid, porsche also made other nice air cooled cars, they also made some great air and watercooled cars, where Do they fit in ,no mans land ha ha!

As for your seat question , the came with several seats . An original pair a low one I keep in the car and a lollipop seat from later in her life . Currently she has the low on passenger side and a current fia recaro spg on the drivers side .

Why do you keep going away from them in the first place to necessitate having to go back to them with 'your tail between your legs?' Sounds like you go through phases a lot. What is usually the first sign of dissatisfaction that creeps or the sort of thing that tempts you elsewhere?
I don't really go far . It's just that new things come out and I get tempted . I try them , tire of them and more often than not sell them .I had a phase where I tried to convince myself that it was in my head and went very modern ( keeping the old ) but trying them over time I just found them not as enjoyable . I also feared becoming a beard after a few unpleasant experiences with some pcgb beards .
I've given up now and am growing my beard nice and thick !

I do think that the 2.2S is the pick of the bunch. Built while the family still had full control of the factory. I believe the lightest piston weight of all the S's including the RS. Biggest BHP per litre. I've never driven one but I reckon it would be the one to own. I have an early S but I have not driven that yet either. But I did have a very decent drive of a 65 SWB at Spa last year. Lovely car
I agree with this , I prefer the characteristics of the 2.2 to all other s models . Drove mine in Berlin for a year and a half sun , rain and snow and she was tremendous . Every journey was a little adventure in itself !

Doom - think a few of us are making the journey to RSR 2015 at Laguna Seca later in the year. Any plans to do that? Some drunken conversations about taking the 964 RSR out there though nothing further discussed. Be good to hook up if you are.
Cheers.
It's 15th October , going to be tight as I'm racing at Paul Richard . I'll keep you posted Cheers.
