Sorry to go a bit OT, but is that a "raisable" engine platform the engine and box are on?

Doom,
Fantastic pics of 356, funnily enough I was at Race America @ Elkhart Lake last Sept, some tremendous air cooled machines there too

And even better now. Those pics were taken before the stance (ride height) was sorted out properly.

The air cooled 911 . I swear I have actually tried not to like them .
I've tried everything , everything . From modern HyperCars to classics from other manufacturers . Nothing comes close . Even Porsches of modern times (apart from the Carrera gt) hold no LONG TERM interest and are a shadow a pastiche of the real deal . Sure I fall in love with others but the novelty wears off . The grass ISN'T greener and I always creep home with my tail between my legs .
I love the way they feel , sound and above all else drive . I love the fact that I can fix it enough to get home ( stupid old ME !) , that it's still fast enough , that's it gets positive reactions ( no shaking hand motions directed at an old 911) and yet they are still strong and comfortable enough for daily use . They fit on real roads , they ride on real roads , they are fun at sane speeds on real roads and in all conditions yet they can still hold their own on a track even today . There is one for every mood , for every purpose , for every climate and even every budget . I had an epiphany tonight , I completely and utterly adore them all ; they are the best cars ever made .

I admit it , I Kneel before Zod
Sorry for my ramblings
The end

Why do you keep going away from them in the first place to necessitate having to go back to them with 'your tail between your legs?' Sounds like you go through phases a lot. What is usually the first sign of dissatisfaction that creeps or the sort of thing that tempts you elsewhere?

This is the quintessential 911 in my book. I had the pleasure of driving a few original old Porsches back to back, even a original 2.7 RS lightweight, a 2.4S and a SWB 67S, but the 2.2S was the one that left _the_ lasting impression on me. The way this engine sounded above 5000 rpm was out of this world. It was like the throttle pedal opened a time portal to a 1970s targa florio event on demand. I've never experienced anything quite like it in a car so pretty and yet so useable.
Part of it was also the owner who told me to not worry about bouncing it against the (mechanical!) rev-limiter, which I of course did not do, but unlike the owners of the other cars he didn't give me stares from the passenger seat whenever the counter went past the 12-o'clock position.

They are way out of my price range now but the prices fully justified in my eyes.
Oh, light ivory 2.2S with pepita recaros... I too need you in my life. frown

Thanks everyone. Factoid- the body in metal took 700+ hours of one man's obsession and craftwork.

I think it was Tuthills who gave me the sage advice that the best thing you can do with a 2.2S is drive the nuts off it and based off their latest exploits I say Hail Mary to that. Definitely a car that begs one to ask whether speed alone is enjoyable.

The car will soon emerge from hibernation, like the spring sunshine blasting away the cobwebs with the flat 6 wail.

Before the thread deviates, I suffer the same as disease as OP wtdoom but slightly disagree on the medicine - it's not the air cooling but simply the analogue cars that excite me.

And Jackal- as I once bought your 340R (another why did I sell it car) you would be very welcome to try the S.

I do think that the 2.2S is the pick of the bunch. Built while the family still had full control of the factory. I believe the lightest piston weight of all the S's including the RS. Biggest BHP per litre. I've never driven one but I reckon it would be the one to own. I have an early S but I have not driven that yet either. But I did have a very decent drive of a 65 SWB at Spa last year. Lovely car

Thanks for this,i think you are correct sorry,by looking at the shadows on the van and trailer, they are the same as outside afn.But the sun light at the targa is in a different position! There is a series of these photos.
The car did race at the targa, and was the first customer car to be delivered,i wonder why some one would go to so much effort!!
My son is building a rep of the van.

Prettiest car so far. I like the racing stuff, but this is just so simple and so elegant. You can keep your flared arches and big spoilers etc smile

I don't really go far . It's just that new things come out and I get tempted . I try them , tire of them and more often than not sell them .
I had a phase where I tried to convince myself that it was in my head and went very modern ( keeping the old ) but trying them over time I just found them not as enjoyable . I also feared becoming a beard after a few unpleasant experiences with some pcgb beards .
I've given up now and am growing my beard nice and thick !

I agree with this , I prefer the characteristics of the 2.2 to all other s models .
Drove mine in Berlin for a year and a half sun , rain and snow and she was tremendous . Every journey was a little adventure in itself !

2.2S has always been known to have a great screamer of an engine .... last of the high compression early cars as the compression ration was dropped for the 2.4 & 2.7 MFI motors

Luckilly, 2.2S pistons can be fitted to a 2.4 ( same barrel size, different stroke ) which ups the compression in a 2.4S motor which gives it an extra sparkle and a differnt sound again smile

No worries - the Targa Florio photo got me all excited - thought we had pictures of both ends of the same journey, plus evidence the AFN parts van had driven all the way from Islesworth to Sicily ! Is your car the ex Paddy MacNally motor? If yes you might like the photo below - again with another famours AFN van and GVB 911D on show: (thx to Alan Giddins for pic)

...would be great to recreate this at Goodwood MM73 !

Cheers, Will
