991 GTS would be a far better ownership experience as well as not costing significantly more to run.
I would get the GTS all day every day.
O/T but M235i is an absolute bargain. We bought one, I think it's an awesome little car and it's an absolute rocket, I find the sheer rabid pace of it unbelievable for the cash and I have to saying was a stroke of genius by BMW to include Michelin PSS as std. The tyres are magnificent!

Wow, a very negative reception for the M4! I really want one, mainly because you can get a fully loaded M3 for - what - £40-50k less than well specced GTS?
Have any journos done a proper comparison? I do appreciate reviews have been disappointing for the M3/M4, but it seems SO good on paper and am questioning if i would find the problems driving 7/10ths on the road.

Lack of traction is very annoying.
I had the tc light flashing in 4th gear, admittedly it was on a cold damp road, but I wasn't even giving it much welly.
(It also has MPSS tyres)
It's a nice car yes, comfortable seats and it appears well put together, but a few issues have become an annoyance.
I'd heartily recommend at least a 24hr test drive.

a lightly used m4 is half the price of a new 991 GTS so not really a fair comparison on the performance or drive.
drive and usage not really comparable as a family car, you really need both.
single or couple? buy a 981.
the 991 GTS fits that niche that if you have young kids ( over 2 years) nothing really comes close and while you wilt as the telephone number invoice is created, deep down you don't have any other rational choice

I'd hardly say you're spoilt it's not like you're buying them outright, you've worked hard enough so get the best car you can afford per month so it'll be the Porsche having had an M3 since November I'd have to say it's been disappointing, rather than get a 991 GTS why not get a 997 GT3 or a nice 991 GT3.I've been weighing up for some time the relative merits of an M4 vs a Cayman GTS, but now I've looked at order lead times for the Cayman which are up to 9 months minimum, I have moved to the 991 911 GTS. It's a conserable step up in terms of cost, but a great car nonetheless. I'm trying to justify the £400 per moth price differential over the M4 ( yes, it's a typical spoilt brat problem to have!!). The chosen car would be my DD, although I don't do any more than 12000 a year.

Lots of deliberating and not helped that I can secure a deal on a 911 GTS for April delivery!!.
GT3 for me is just a little too compromised. This car will be a DD after all! GTS has the nice blend of performance vs every day practicality IMHO.
What sort of mileage are you guys getting as an average out of your tyres, and what does a set cost ? I'm not tracking the car, but have a mixture of motorway and back roads to contend with ( slightly interesting in my M135 this morning in -6 deg C!!).

I would order that 911 GTS and enjoy the wait for April delivery. I did the same with my 981 Cayman...ordered it straight from launch in November 2012....took delivery in April 2013.....It was like being a kid waiting for Christmas!Lots of deliberating and not helped that I can secure a deal on a 911 GTS for April delivery!!.

Ordered 991gts two weeks ago and early March delivery - had test drive and car was great . I have had M6 which had great engine but flawed smg box and then had new v8 M3 in 2011 that I got bored of after 12 months as it felt puny compared to M6. Bought a 997 carrera 4 last year and really liked it even with tiptronic hence new 991. For me Bmw have got too generic and difficult to tell if you are in 1 series or 6 series . M4 look very mundane to me. 
Well it's decided!
After some deliberation and making various Porsche dealers squeak, I'm calling one back tomorrow and placing a deposit on a 991 GTS.
Many thanks to everyone for all your advice and views. It really has helped to validate how I felt about each car. The 911 is more of a stretch, but will likely result in me keeping it for many years!!

Popping to the dealer tomorrow to confirm spec and colour, and take the opportunity of driving the GTS with a Porsche driving instructor. Looking forward to it....
Any views on colour choices? Wife likes metallic white, although I like the metallic black, I question whether it would look too much like a batmobile as the wheels are black too.....

Get it in black, red or dark blue, surely.
By the way, anyone getting as many miles out of their back tyres as out of the fronts in a Porsche is doing it all wrong!
Get paint to sample! As has been said, Audi white is getting a bit passe. There are a good 40 or PTS colours available; i wouldn't pay the astronomical figure for a GTS without giving it a unique touch.
I'd probably go for Grigio Telestio - a sort of primer grey in description but looks incredible in the flesh, especially with black wheels. It's a Lambo colour...
