Be very aware that the 996 Turbo's are old cars now. I spent six months last year looking for one and scoured the country, without finding a good one. I ended up with a 997 C4S, a brilliant car with an OPC warranty. As a daily driver with your sort of mileage I would go for a newer car, better to drive, more economical and probably less road tax.

The less road tax thing is unlikely, since 996 turbos are pre-2006. Mine costs me about £270 a year I think.

I guess we all have different standards, but I think mine is still a good one. Needs a scuff on the rear bumper sorting (should be more careful when reversing when parking!) but it's been regularly serviced, generally decent condition, still a shade under 60k (although only by about 150 miles), manual, and I'm only the second owner (first owner 7 years, me for just over 5 years). True, it's now almost 13 years old and I imagine a newer car would have less general wear - but overall I think mine has aged well and I would assume there are others out there that have to.

As for the comment about 996s being ugly - I must admit, I've always thought they were one of the least pretty 911s, but the turbo is slightly pretty than NA cars. I think they've aged well though - mine looks less ugly than when I bought it! But maybe I've just got used to it. wink

Nice example.

But no PSE and 70k on the clock...

I'd be looking hard as to why so keenly priced. N spec tyres absent perhaps??

If Its an original panel car the mileage and lack of sports exhaust wouldn't put me off if I was looking for an entry level Porsche which could be used as much as possible.

I don't disagree. It certainly looks tidy. But I'd be having a good nose around it smile

Yep amazing value for money when you consider the 964 C4 cab albeit with only 60k miles is £6-7k more!

Low spec, wrong engine, wrong gearbox and high miles. I do like the wheels though.

For a Porsche novice I still think a Gen II Box or Cayman through Porsche AUC is likely best for the OP

That was for the Turbo. For the Gen 2 NA cars, the PDK is the one to have. I suspect I'd like the PDK Turbo, but haven't driven one.

I was in the same boat until last week. I had 20-25K to spend on a convertible, looked at the Boxsters and decided these weren't for me as it just isn't a 911, but they cost about the same to run. Also suspected the 911 would hold its value better. (No idea if thats true but it could be)

I then looked at the 996 and the 997S Gen 1, the 997 is a much nicer car to drive, better looking and newer (obviously) so should be better to use as a daily runner. I found a good black 997S Gen 1 convertible (38000ml) just over my budget, but looking at them it was worth spending that little more on a newer car as I need it to get my wife to work and back every day.
I felt that a lot of the 996s were looking old now, where as most of the 997s still looked fresh and hadnt worn as badly as the older 996s.

So for me Id get as new a car as you can with as low mileage as you can for your money in a colour you like, if its a 996 or a 997 I dont think its important, unless theres something wrong with the 3.8 engine? Dont tell me if there is, I dont want to know tongue out
cheers
Phil

That's great to hear Phil. What year is your 997? I am really unsure about the possible "bore score" issue. I intend to test drive a Cayman S and 911 to compare. Convertible doesn't appeal to me which is the only reason I wouldn't consider boxster. Is the 3.8 a more reliable engine?

Why do you say that? Is it a safer option in terms of reliability, costs etc?

Looks great but to be honest 70k would put me off, as 100k (rightly or wrongly) seems to hit values badly generally.

I'd rather have a higher miles Gen 2 997 than a Gen 1. Buying at this price would take the edge off depreciation.
