Hi all,

I am trying to decide on my next vehicle. I have never owned a Porsche, but am naturally very tempted. Budget is £25,000-£30,000. I have looked on the internet and see various references to bore score which from what I can make out does not affect gen 2 vehicles as much?

I intend to try various vehicles, but I guess my question is this.

Would my money be better in getting as newer Boxster / Cayman as possible, or look at a 996 /997? Is there a massive difference in ownership of all?

I know you get the "poor mans Porsche" rubbish from the uneducated, none of which bothers me. Just general advice please on the best entry route to Porsche ownership. Will be using the car as a daily for just me and the other half occasionally. Monthly mileage circa 1,000-1,250.

Many thanks in anticipation,

Paul

£30k is a difficult budget, its high for a Gen 1 997 but too low for a Gen 2 997 with PDK.

I would avoid a Gen 1 car unless you have a 2 year warranty and a good history. I know of a good Targa 4 with a new engine and 2 year warranty that will come up for sale in the next 6 months (not mine).

Cayman is a very different car to a 911, drive a few & see what you prefer.

For your budget and intended use get a 996 TT. Will hold value well now as opposed to the 997 regular car that has further depreciation to go and wont give you the thrill the turbo will.

What age and spec should I be aiming for? Am I right in saying that bore score isn't an issue with the turbo engines?

Well as is generally the case you get what you pay for so work towards the upper end of your budget but don't get hung up on what year as not much changed from 2000-2004.

Yup also fitted with the better engines so more peace of mind too though of course all these cars costs to run and all garages will charge extra for servicing a turbo.

Lots of silver cars about. Personally think they look mean in black

OP: stock answers are 996 Turbo or 997.1 C2S smile

Left field answer is 996 CSR from RPM Technik smile

Embarrassing question - what is the TT? Tiptronic?

If so any thoughts on this?

TT = twin turbo i.e. just a 996 turbo

Ah, thanks yes

Can't see any twin turbos around the 30k mark.

What is the general consensus on manual v auto in the 911?

But 996's are ugly with awful headlights & an even worse interior (apparently) wink

Tiptronic is less of an issue for some than it would be on a NA car as the turbo has a lot more torque and is considered more a GT car than a NA 911 which is more sportscar-esque. That said, my 550 Maranello was a GT car with mega torque and a manual box and I wouldn't have had it any other way, conversely my Boxster GTS will be a PDK when it arrives so it's not always that simple! But, as ever, you'd have to try both and see what you prefer smile

TT is an Audi.

I preferred the manual Turbo, but some are very hapy with the tiptronic. Once you sort out launching in first, waking up the gearbox and brake boosting it's probably ok. I'd like to try a PDK Turbo one day.

Manual for the 996 Turbo, personal choice of course.I test drove several tips and manuals and the manual suited the car so much better, felt less involved with the tip, both great cars though!

You could get a 987.2 Boxster S through Porsche (and therefore warranted) for less than £30k. That's what I'd do.

Chris.
