'Potential massive bills' from a 996 Turbo!? As mentioned before this is nonsense, they aren't like running a fiesta, but don't have huge running costs such as lambo's or ferrari/s, servicing, tyres, etc etc are all reasonable and if you get a well looked after one you won't have any major bills, the engines are very solid and bullet proof if looked after well, same engine as the GT3.

Thanks but I'm well aware of 911 running costs, including the cost of engine rebuilds, from a previous 996 I owned well over a decade ago.

Having read about recent services on a couple of Turbos I was looking at of £7k and £4.5k respectively, I would like to go into any potential ownership experience with my eyes wide open this time. As it happens I think I've well and truly missed the boat on an 'affordable for me' 996 Turbo and am off to look at a sorted 996 C4S today and a late 997 next week.

Thanks for that, I'm in a similar situation and would really like a Gen 2, are you saying you think they'd take £30k for a £35k car? That's some pretty aggressive bargaining if they do. I've found a gorgeous Ruby Red 2008 last of the Gen 1s just down the road for £31k, sounds great but I'd rather get the later model if poss......
I'm saying that if you get a trade price for cars you're looking at (wbac usefull for this) then you know what the trader paid for it, or what private sale cars would be offered by the trade. Watch a few cars for a while, and when cars have sat for a few months, chuck in some cheeky offers (above trade value) and leave it with sellers to see if they bite.

yes not difficult to get a bill like that every 3-4 years if using the car as a daily and driving it as intended.

In five and a half years and 40k miles, I've never had bills like that. I've had a couple around the £2k mark, but that is a "big" bill in my experience.

What on earth are you doing to your car to generate bills like that, and who are you taking it to?

ha OPC Hatfield. Over 8 yrs since new and 70,000 miles £23,000 spent on servicing. £7,000 of that was extending warranty till year 8 so let's be kind and say £16,000. So average without warranty would be £2k per year but I reckon warranty covered min of £60-70k of claims inc a brand new mezger engine. I remember a large bill of about £5k which included brakes all round before engine let go. At the same time I renewed warranty for a further £2k so £7k out the door at that visit. Did save my butt though!

Not quite as bad but I got a bill of over £3600 for my Cayman a few weeks back; service, new suspension and warranty renewal.
