Hello,

A friend owns a Focus RS500 plus a Mk1 Focus RS but is extremely tempted to change both Fords and dip her toe in to the intoxicating world of Porsche ownership for the first time. The short list is either a CR or 97 turbo, so to help she'd be very interested in hearing your experiences and comparisons of both cars plus examples of real world running expenses including service costs. Budget is up to a max of 55k

Thanks in advance everyone smile

Not a choice any one can make bar her.

The 2 cars are chalk and cheese.

How about a GTR for £55k ?

Does she want a manual or an auto ?

Really depends on what your friend likes. The CR is a great little car and a wonderful naturally aspirated, deft-handling car. A 997 turbo, is also a great car but it's more of an all weather monster. It's very quick, tons of torque and lots of kudos too, but it's more of a GT than a sports car IMHO. The CR on the other hand is definitely not a GT car, but it's a very engaging car to drive and of those two would be my choice.

Oh and the CR would be cheaper to run. Porsches only need servicing every two years or 20,000mls. Cost is about the same overall as a normal car, say £600-£800 after 2 years.

I have passed the message on for you, from what I have seen of the cars they are both excellent, the mk1 RS has around 50k miles and very well looked after, the RS500 around 1500 miles, it's pretty much as new condition imo

Agree about 'chalk & cheese' - two different ends of the Porsche spectrum.

You'd also need to consider, say, a 997 GTS or a Boxster/Cayman GTS to judge the full spread of options.

I thought you'd have a "For Sale" board on it by now - one careful owner, never raced or rallied!

I agree if I had one of those especially in that colour it would be a keeper. Just lovely.

I still hold out hope of seeing the Viper Green with pccb I missed out on a few years ago. That was a special car.

If I go for the GT4 I'd be ordering Viper Green.

Always bemuses slightly when people talk of a 997 turbo (or 996 version) being a GT car. Compared to a GT3RS maybe but not compared to a real GT car - Aston, Jag, Conti GT, 6 series etc. Tyre roar, engine noise, relatively hard suspension, high level of feel, taut handling is far more sports car than GT. I certainly know when I have been on a 2+ hour journey in mine.

Sorry but OP question is a little bit ridiculous - totally different cars and not sure why anyone would not know which one was more for them TBH, FWIW I am sure the CR is a lovely thing to drive but I cannot get on with the looks, too dainty IMHO whereas the 981 looks great

Thanks - Keen on both of them really. Contact details are available through my profile..

Also, I'd go Cayman R. It's 'special' in my opinion. Just ensure its got the proper gearbox (manual) wink
