Hi all

Had my new (well, used but new to me) Cayenne for a week now.
It's a 3litre diesel, 2011.

It's from a franchised dealer but not a Porsche dealer, so its not Porsche approved used but hopefully will have some after sales service.

I'll call the dealer tomorrow but I'm intending to drive 350 miles tomorrow and need to set off very early (before they open), and wondered if I should.

So the problem:
I noticed what I thought was air con water on the driveway for a couple of days, but its staining, and now ive had a good look and I'm sure its oil.
There's a lot of it under the car in the sort of bottom tray thing under the engine, just behind the front off road guard plate thing.
to describe the amount I'd say there's a coating over the bottom tray but not lake.

I checked the oil level and it has definitely gone down at least one bar on the electric monitor since I've had it (1 week).

So I assume it is oil?

1) Could anyone indicate if they think fro this sketchy description that it is oil.

2) And if so what is it likely to be?

3) I live miles from the garage I bought it from. Would it be expected I can get a local garage to do the repair under their warranty or the RAC one it came with?

Thanks to you all in advance for any help you can give me.

JC

Bad news I'm afraid. It's actually quite common on the 3.0 diesel. I had exactly the same symptoms on my 2011 Cayenne. It's an engine out, strip and re-seal of block. Big job. Insist on it going to an official Porsche garage. Leicester did mine and a few others too

Oh st. Now I'm worried! I've got a 958 3.0 diesel too. I definitely see air-con water but will be keeping a VERY keen eye on this from now on. Have the Porsche warranty till December though. Fingers crossed...

Sounds like very expensive out-of-warranty heart surgery that. Not noticed anything on my 2012 Diesel - yet.

How many mile has the patient done...?

Oh dear frown
It's done 39k.
Getting a local garage to take a look to see what's happening.
Do u think with the RAC warranty I'll be able to get the work done at an opc.

Thanks all for your input by the way.

I forget the hours it took altogether but i think it was either 60 or 80? It's not a simple job - the tech has to go through an online system linked to Germany who then advise on parts etc, send them, fit, etc etc. I don't think it's just gaskets used but also a glue which seals the block(?). HUGE job anyway, and thanks to Porsche Warranty it was done painlessly with the use of a courtesy car for 2 weeks. Big thanks to Leicester OPC too. No idea on cost but wouldn't expect much change out of £10k for a paying customer. Make sure you renew your warranties guys!

Yours might not be the worst case scenario like mine mate but i wouldn't mess around taking it to a 'local' garage if it's not Porsche Approved. You need to take it to an OPC who will clean off the oil and apply a leak detection spray - drive it 600 miles then take back to OPC for examination of where leak is coming from. No idea on RAC warranty. How long have you owned the car? It may of been leaking for a while...

Thanks Phooey.

I've only had it a week :/

Not the best start.
but the garage ingot it from have said if it's just a sump seal or lose filter cap it won't need to go to a porsche specialist.

I'm guessing in the 1st three months the onus falls on them not the rac warranty?

Do you think either way I'll be able to demand it goes to porsche or not?

Thanks again smile

I have no experience of RAC warranty, so can't comment on that. But, what i would be inclined to do is firstly visit the dealer (LandRover?) you bought the car from to give them the chance to check it's not a simple fix? Also arrange to see the dealer principle and also might be worth contacting trading Standards (today!) just to simply register your concerns. If it is the same problem as mine then the engine would of been leaking/weeping for weeks/months and would of been spotted in a pre-delivery-inspection / handover.

Just been underneath mine. No drips or oil at the gearbox/block seal, but a little bit up the right side about half way up the engine.

I don't think it's too much to worry about. I don't think there's an engine out there that doesn't seep somewhere.

Get them to fix it properly or refund. Nothing to do with warranty if you bought it in that state.

Thanks again for all your help.

Well the dealer just told my Mrs to activate our RAC Warranty by calling the number they supply.
I assume so we can pursue through them?
We've had the car a week and 2 days, and surely it must have had the 88 point check to get the RAC warranty?

I turned the engine on this morning too to check the oil level and its now only on one bar above minimum.
In the oil level display it was on bar 3 of 4 yesterday, (the bars between the white lines) and today after driving 1 mile total, its now on bar 1 of 4.
So it's loosing quite a bit by the looks of it.

Would that still be a seal or is that too quick a loss?
Hopefully its just a filter cap not torqued properly as someone suggested.

Fingers xed.

Rather stressful all this...thnx for your help all smile

It's the dealer's problem, not yours. I wouldn't get involved with a dodgy warranty claim personally.

Mine wasn't losing anywhere near that much oil - hopeful for you that it could be a sump bung or something?

You could ask the dealer to come get it picked up and drop you off a courtesy car. I really don't know what the process is with a 3rd party warranty.

Thanks guys.

Well we're getting the RAC to take it to a local garage to check its not anything simple.
If it's a major prob then we'll have a row to get it to a opc or specialist.

Fingers xed!
Thanks again smile

Hi All

Had exactly the same problem on my 2011 Cayenne !! It sounds like as others have said (as was with mine) Oil Leak on the Block - It is an engine out job and took my local OPC 6 Weeks from memory - thankfully I still had the warranty cover and I insisted on a Panamera Diesel for the duration!

Now replaced the above in Nov 2014 with the latest Generation Cayenne Diesel and am hoping this one is less hassle than the previous one (I'm a glutton for punishment!!)

All the best

How many miles did yours go at MF? Mine was just under 60k. It's a great car though and i think i would have another (maybe V8d next?), just highlights the importance of warranty nowadays - so many problems are becoming 'engine out' jobs!

ironically i didn't go for a Rangerover because of the reliability issues...

Don't forget it's an Audi engine. I wonder how many of their cars are suffering the same problem.

Hi all

Seems like I may be lucky with this leak.

My wife's just taken a call from the local garage.
She said they said it was just a washer that's gone.

I assume the washer from the drain plug?

So they're going to replace it.

I presume a non OPC garage is OK to do this straightforward repair?

Thanks for all your help...am seriously thinking about paying the extra for the Porsche check and warranty now though!

Hi

In answer to the other posters question my leak was spotted/dealt with at 50K something Miles !

The Car had 70+K on it when sold I sold it on and had no troubles once fixed!

I won't go into the other issues I had with it as the last time I did I became target No.1 for all the clever so and so's on here - suffice it to say after checking the Competition when time to replace there was nothing else to touch it for the Driving Dynamic and Price (We Run RR's at our Company as well - No thanks!)so I thought let's have another go - Got the New One (Facelift) in Nov 14 and 4 K miles in no problems so far......!
