Have you ever driven anything turbo'd from the 80's?
Yes

It's all relative
Totally agree which is why I said "every turbo has some lag although modern tech and twin turbos have done a good job at reducing it"

Also agree that n/a also needs to be driven at higher revs to keep the engine on song, and that turbos on boost power exacerbates the non-linear feel, but turbos have lag, they are off boost then on = lag

I hear modern turbos are now spinning them mchanically even when off boost to reduce lag further

Lovely car and nice story.
I'm off to test drive a 996 Turbo in the next day or two and decide if I want to swap my 993 C2 for it.

Please do continue to update your journey with the car.
Don't go there
Keep your 993
A real Porsche
I have a 9934S and and a 991 GT3
The 993 all day long
Never ever to be sold !
Try it, we all have different tastes.

I went from a 3.2 Carrera to a mint 993 C4 (varioram) and didn't click. Ended up going back to another 3.2 Carrera and now have a 996 turbo X50.

They're great cars, so much more usable.

RE OP's comment with what to perhaps replace the 996 turbo with there really isn't anything apart from a 997 or 991 turbo if you want like for like supercar crushing usability with rear seats. Rather than spending extra cash on a change over to a 997 or 991 turbo I'd personally spend that money on a refresh (when needed) on Xona turbos, a set of KW or Bilsteins, Carrillo rods and a sports exhaust = 800bhp hyper car slayer smile

Thank you gents for your excellent contributions. Just got back from a short trip to Brive with my dad to go to a wedding and visiting a friend near Tours. Mainly autoroute but some hilly country roads near Brive and some lively D roads between Limoges and Tour. The car was supreme on the autoroutes and lively company on the D roads, but it was tempting to go far too fast. Although there are fewer cars on the roads there are more combine harvesters. I include the trip computer details and a couple of pics. First tank of petrol averaged 30.1 mpg...
