The engine is better than anything in a 911, but everything else about that R8 is pretty unattractive: chavvy brand image, auto only (and not a great one), big car for something not very comfortable inside.

Chavvy brand image?

Like a Le Coq tracksuit - a £125k car, really?

Yep. It is still an Audi. Same brand image as an S3.

"Chav" as in classless and "aspirational", rather than cheap.

So being aspirational is now chavy?

That's so snotty, which is worse.

Audi = Chavvy ???

It may not be super premium like Ferrai/Lamborghini and even Porsche but its definitely not chavvy. Certainly aspirational and premium even in Supermini class.

The engine is a force of nature in the V10 or sure and is still N/A unlike the equivalent Porsche and the latest Ferrari and McLaren rivals. And you're getting confused with the transmission thinking its still the old R-Tronic single clutch effort rather than the rather brilliant twin clutch S-Tronic. Absolutely nothing wrong with the new one.
Not aware you can get manual alternatives for the Lambo,Ferrari or McLaren alternatives and hardly any Porsche Turbos leave the showroom with 3 pedals either.

And where did you get uncomfortable from? Its nothing of the sort. Apart from being quite wide its very easy to live with in every way.

Its also THE best made car money can buy. Audi's are superbly built anyway and these are constructed in their own special plant at Quattro GmbH.

I associate Audis with wives of middle management types and people who have no clue about cars but want something that their neighbours will know is expensive.

Audi sometimes produces good cars, and the R8 is excellent, but the brand image stinks - mostly because Audi is pretty shameless about producing crappy cars aimed at the people I describe above.

I guess some people class all Bankers as thieves, all Muslims as terrorists, all Brummies as being thick, all Welsh people as sheep botherers, all Daily Mail readers as fascists.................the list goes on and on.

I never thought "chavs" were identified as the wives of Middle Management types though, that is a new one - better tell my missus to shift her chavvy Q5 off me drive? wink

I don't think Porsche need to compete with the Audi R8.

Mmm, some misunderstanding of the definition of Chavs.

I think by that most of us mean the feckless under-class of our towns and cities specializing in inadvisable tattoos, nylon track suits and vicious dogs. Not the wifes of middle management suburbia driving to their Mani/Pedi in handsome and very well made German SUVs.

Not much wrong with Audis brand IMO (And I don't own one) , they have been the most successful car maker of the last decade through some excellent managing of the "brand"

Its the thick end of £30k for an Audi S1 Hatchback (Supermini) and likely north of £40k for the new RS3 (small family hatchback) . Thats seriously profitable car making.

The R8 is just a halo product and probably a loss leader.

I think buying an R8 is buying a brilliant driver's car for a brand who don't normally make them. The prototypical Audi is still between the A3 and A4, and though there are better ways of putting it than tarring an entire group of purchasers as "chavs" (the use of which word I've always found to be fairly self-reflective), there is no escaping that the brand is still associated with a certain type of buyer who doesn't necessarily understand what makes a car great to drive, defends their purchase on the basis of interior quality, and has the aggressive road manners that used to be the sole domain of E46 BMW 320i drivers.

And before you rush to conclusions about my own car buying or driving habits, have a look at my current garage.

So yes, it is fairly well-established that the image of buying an Audi is not one of buying into a history of excellence in sports car design, the odd outlier excepted. Nevertheless, describing anyone as the "feckless under-class" is pretty distasteful.

Fair cop re "chav" - I think I use it in quite an esoteric way to mean "classless".

You do realise that Audi and Porsche are now part of the same company?

Now is it me or are the new R8, the new Audi TT, the 991 and the Cayman all in danger of morphing in to essentially the same shape?

The R8 is one of those cars that looks completely different in real life than in photos. It looks like a supercar from the outside, its just the interior which lets it down on that front.

I thought the V10 Plus is S-Tronic only...?

Manual V10 looks quite a bargain for £60k
It is, I don't mind automatics as long as I have a manual toy, just fancy a change and a bit of performance.
It's a fast car with old school NA feel and steering, the dsg makes it a bit of a weapon.

But the GT4 is coming now so that's that.
V10 Plus is available in manual and s-tronic boxes, with most being specced with the s-tronic.
Manual V10+ cars in the uk = 2 only (one was evo's)
The stronic box really suits that car, and as much as I like a manual, I think the R8 Stronic is a nice solution. Same can't be said for the old Rtronic

I think the more pertinent question will be as to how it handles, if it's anything less than what's been described in the press as poor, then it treads all over the Huracan's toes, which it shares (an admittedly 30mm longer) the floor plan with

V10+ does look like a compelling car though, and if it handles like the existing model, it's something in my sights seeing as I'm pretty sure my Gt4 deposit is about to come back with no allocation

Not at all. I've met many good friends through piston-heads none of whom I'm sure would say I'm insecure.

Funny enough none of them would suggest that a fellow petrolhead who chose to drive an Audi was a chav because it was such an aspirational brand, especially an Audi R8 V10?

I'm sorry but all you've done is highlighted your pretentious prejudices. loser

They would presumably notice your rudeness and A-level class prejudice. smile

You like Audis. Good for you. It doesn't hurt my feelings or make me come out with schoolboy classism.

It would help if you understood what classism meant;

prejudice against people belonging to a particular social class.

That would include higher classes (you apparently) prejudice against lower classes (Audi drivers apparently)

For the record I'm not really an Audi fan as such, but I like the R8 and I think Audis are well engineered cars, Lamborghini quality has certainly improved since being taken over.
