Hello, just in case anyone has done this - and before I have a confusing phone conversation with DVLA..

I have imported a euro spec '79 911SC from California, and only have a bad photocopy of the original German registration document plus the surrendered california title.

I need to prove date of registration and would be happy to join PCGB and get a free CoA if that would work..however, not sure if this will be acceptable to DVLA and so am also looking at the 'Letter of origin' that Porsche can supply (for 65 quid..).

Any advice on this specific point anyone?

Also it looks like my car is exempt for proof of type approval (over 10 years old) so I don't think I need a certificate of origin (another 100 quid!). Can anyone confirm this too?

Cheers

From this site.....
http://www.wikihow.com/Import-a-Used-Car-from-Germ...

[Site says]

Call Porsche UK in Reading (head office) and ask them for a Certificate of Conformity. They will, in turn, ask you for a letter containing your chassis number and a cheque for £60 or so, and will send one through in the post 10 days or so later (they have to send to Germany to get it). This is to get the vehicle "Type approved", which means the model you have is in general approved for use in the UK. The certificate is in German and has info about the length, weight, emission levels etc. of the car.

Thanks for that..but I'm afraid that article, like lots of info around this, is getting mixed up with what is needed.

For instance I have just confirmed with DVLA that because the car is over 10 years old, they don't need evidence of type approval - which is what the Certificate of conformity is for (currently £105 from Porsche).

So I just need proof of first registration, which, again from Porsche UK site, looks like it needs to be a Letter of Origin, at £65. I just can't see why a CoA won't work instead, and I#d rather have a CoA as I can get it free as a PCGB member..(and its a nicer thing to have in a frame, even if it is a hi res copy - DVLA keep everything you send them).

Its a very tedious and bureaucratic process with a lot of Catch 22s but you will get there in the end. It just takes time. Another one is insurance. In order to register the car you need a letter from your insurance. However, the insurance only insures cars if they have a numberplate. So only use insurers that will use your chassis number or alternatively buy a private plate and use that.

Just done this, you need the letter of origin. The rest of the info is in most reference books on the model you have. The Bentley book on the SC is the best

This is what I am needing, thank you my friend. Off to send in my LoA application. :-)
The chap at the DVLA said to poulate the form with as much info as you can find, despite not having a CoC. I have a bad copy of the German reg doc which actually has loads of the info I need, including drive-by dB readings etc.

Hagerty insured it on the VIN alone by the way, while it is in between US title and Uk registration..top service from them, recommended.
