I've been banned twice in the past for speeding and just got off doing 86 in a 30 limit in December.

86 in a 30 you should be locked up. Thats plain dangerous and stupid.

I know and agree.........then again, we've all done something a little silly and stupid!

Don't forget some 30 MPH dual carriageways used to be 70MPH limits. Everything isn't always as it seems.

what happens when you do reach 12 points?

As DAZ says, if you can plead "Exceptional Hardship" (allowed once every 3 years) and convince the beak that loss of your licence will have a real negative impact on SOMEONE ELSE (i.e. partner, children, mum, etc etc), you can avoid a ban.

This happened to me 12 years ago (when young and impetuous). I'd already got 6 points, and was caught by a GATSO in Cornwall (96 in a 70), then stopped for 107 in a 70 in Somerset 3 weeks later.

Avoided the dire consequences of public transport by:
1. Getting both offences heard together (fairly simple admin task)
2. Hiring a LOCAL solicitor in Yeovil
3. Grovelling profusely, whilst wearing very grey yet smartish attire.
4. My "Exceptional Hardship" plea was based on the fact that, at the time, my partner was a nurse working shifts, and we lived in a dodgy part of the East End. It required but a little imagination to describe an innner-city environment of such squalour and drug-fuelled violence, that the mere thought of her having to negotiate the mean streets of Bethnal Green to get home after a late shift had the magistrates weeping in the aisles.
5. RESULT - big fine, 6 more points for each offence, but no ban.

So I carried 18 points around with me for the next 3 years (very slowly, I might add).

Only indiscretion since then has been 3 points and tax in 2001, and a 2 week ban last year whilst on summer holidays (luckily, this was incurred just the other side of Rouen, so minimal impact, unless one counts that furnished by the wife on finding out she had to drive the rest of the way to Bordeaux!!)

Cheers
Sean

I had a salesman take me out in a 360 Modena, from a dealership in Essex... he got it well past 100 between two sets of traffic lights on the urban dual carriageway outside

Pretty sure it was a 30 zone.... this wasn't particularly sensible but definitely safer than doing 40-odd past a school at closing time. There are some 60 mph main roads that are safe at 140, after all...

Yup, confiscated my licence, 100 Euro fine, no driving in France for 14 days. Happens a lot when Le Mans is on too (one of our guys got this treatment last year).

Licence still languishing in a Gendarmerie in rural France, did not have time to detour on the way back to the ferry to pick it up. Easily fixed with a duplicate from DVLA for £20 on return though

Cheers

Glad there were no babylon to witness today's peddling in the M400 mate. I'd be looking at 12 months bird just for being a passenger.

Hat off to the best car control I have EVER experienced.

Maybe someone can answer this... If you're caught speeding, by say a camera you'll get 3 points and there's little that can be done about it, fair enough.

If I break into someones house, I'll probably get away with a caution?

Recently a Judge had her home broken into and she stated that ANY burglar should get 6 months minimum sentence. Result: she got the sack because poor thieves wouldn't get a fair trial with her.

No. Remember the thread about "Porsche Envy" a few weeks ago?

I plan on moving to Canada before the year is out.

Ace,

I'll settle for a ride in your Arena TT next time you're on a track day. Keep me informed...

Using the fourteen day rule, I'd then add two or three days for postage delays and look at getting the champagane in for breakfast after the postman has been on tuesday next week. As an aside, the scameraship in my part of the world normally get their NIPS out within seven days. All this assumes that you are personally the registerred keeper of the car.

Regular speeding points count for 3, but they physically stay on your licence for four years.

It is an absolutely disgraceful state of affairs.

When I contemplate my, indeed our, collective passions automotive and then behold the likes of Red Ken Livingstone, I cannot avoid the conclusion that with so many people like that holding the whip hand, something, sooner or later will have to give.

We cannot KEEP tolerating his brand of intolerant, anti-fun zeitgeist.

hmmm...think i've got a bit of a problem!

been banned 3 times...all totting up...so thats 36 points in 23 years...and goodness only knows how much in fines.....bans were 2x30 and 1x90 days.....next time apparently its a year.....oh and I'm currently on 12, with 9 showing 6 counting....dont ask!

how long can you go on blaming youth and impetuosity.

Is mileage any mitigation? I've regularly done c.24-36k p.a. and on the law of averages thats got to suggest something..doesn't it....well i'd convinced myself!

not proud of it...just surprised at the extent given what I've read here.
