Yep, its pure marketing. I think they are seeing the classic market booming like crazy and they are wondering how they can get some of the action.

As you say, the speed race seems to be coming to a conclusion, Ferrari said years ago that they wouldnt chase top speed anymore.

The experience is the target now. And thats a good thing.

Wouldn't suddenly creating a manual 991 GT3 be like going backwards for Porsche with these cars having insisted on supplying PDK cars only? I appreciate people on here love the idea of manual and are therefore praising Porsche for only making manual cars wity the GT4 but creating a manual GT3 that all things being equal will be slower than the previous PDK model doesn't sit right with me. This said I'd love to see them do it in the same way I'd like to see them make a GT4 RS and even a PDK GT4 expanding the range

Why wouldn't they just create a sub-brand.

How about a 991 GT4?

Why would they do that?

The Porsche numbering and naming is already complicated enough. The current UK 911 range offering shows 25 variants:

911 Carrera
911 Carrera Black Edition
911 Carrera S
911 Carrera GTS
911 Carrera Cabriolet
911 Carrera Cabriolet Black Edition
911 Carrera S Cabriolet
911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet
911 Carrera 4
911 Carrera 4 Black Edition
911 Carrera 4S
911 Carrera 4 GTS
911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet
911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet Black Edition
911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet
911 Carrera 4 GTS Cabriolet
911 Targa 4
911 Targa 4S
911 Targa 4 GTS
911 Turbo
911 Turbo S
911 Turbo Cabriolet
911 Turbo S Cabriolet
911 GT3
911 GT3 RS

They should be simplifying their offering. The GT4 is the performance model of the Cayman range.

They also have the GT5 in the wings (probably for the Macan).

Would be good to get a true Clubsport at some point.

Do we know for a fact that Porsche will be releasing a manual gearbox option for the next gt3 or is it pure internet speculation?

Fact, there's a quote by Andreas Preuninger in the german sport auto 991 GT3 RS super test that confirms it. I can screenshot it on my iPad and post it here tonight. (iPad is at home, I am not)
Sport auto does not have a reputation for joking around with things like that.

They did trademark "GT5" fairly recently...

But how much of the classic market is booming due to buyers chasing driving experience rather than simply chasing the general trend of rising prices? At the start perhaps but recently with the rate of increase? A lot of people generally like to say they want "lighter, manual, more involvement" but the new cars that end up being bought are "newest, fastest, easy to drive and dual clutch".

Perhaps the market will split as I think Meaden mentioned in the GT4 evo review for the speed race to be continued by the cars like the 991 RS and such but cars like the GT4 (manual and focused on involvement) continue to be made if there ultimately proves to be enough demand for these types of cars after the initial wave of hype of a new GT car dies down.
