X50, in itself, will not have any significant effect on residuals in the years to come.
Even the S wasn't that special compared to the standard car, just an option list tick special.

The X50 kit was quite a premium when new circa £7,400 in 2002 which rose to £8,700 by 2004. Obviously early owners will have taken the hit, but there's still a premium for the X50 with it's extra 30 official factory horses.X50, in itself, will not have any significant effect on residuals in the years to come.

Another blatant X50 owner, who suggested the OP went with the non-X50 car due as the rare colour will also command a premium. Ideally you want a rare colour and X50!

Its never entered my head to opt for an X50 and an X50 only.
I've always set a budget and got the best I can get for that budget private or dealer. (most privately with an inspection)
Granted my car has a slush box in it which was never on my tick list but with the additional power it compliments the car very well and there are no over revs in any of the rev ranges.
I mean lets face it if a standard 420bhp 6T isn't quick enough on UK roads then you'll be losing you're license before the next MOT is due.

I had a very good look at it if that is the one and it is superb.
In the end i went for a 997.1 Tip because mine is a daily driver with a 50 mile M25 commute.
I bought one with 22,000 miles from OPC for less than the more expensive 996 Turbo being discussed here about 15 months ago.
I negotiated a very long OPC warranty as part of the deal.
At the time i was looking at 996 Turbo's but just pushed that extra bit further to get the 997 which i feel took a step forward in build quality.
At that time (Nov,Dec 2013) the very best 996 Turbo S with ceramics and less than 30K miles was £36K which i thought was toppy
and decent low miles 996 TT's (less than 40K miles) were between £27K and £35K with the X50's being in lower £30K's.
I'm glad to see the price increase of the 996 Turbo's as they seem to be pushing up the 997 Turbo too.

CGJJ - no, mine was from a Bentley dealer who received it as a PX, it wasn't perfect (has all the stamps in the book but 5 owners and a PXing to a dealer means paperwork long gone) but some TLC, a detail and a few years under my stewardship will fix that.
That is an excellent deal you got there, but for me it had to be a manual as I have never got on with the tip, and PDK cars were well over budget.
I was originally after a 996 as budget wouldn't stretch to 997, i dithered long enough for prices to close. Differential between a good X50 996 with comparable miles, as about £6k when I bought in March 14 which to me was well worth it for the prettier front end and better interior, and 480ps standard over the 450ps in hard to find X50. I also found the better interior and spec of 997 made me choice easier, I only had adaptive seats and sports chrono as must haves on 997 which most people ticked, whereas 996 I wanted ali packs and other bits to lift the interior, much harder to find.
In retrospect should have bought a 996 and swapped now for minimal extra cost
but been very happy with the car and reckon it is worth a bit more than I paid now, a bonus I guess

Bit of a nightmare, spoke with both dealers, and still not made my mind up. I'm hopeless at this...
I must admit I'm struggling a bit with the money having seen the small gap to a 997 now.. not that I want a 997, I want a 996, but cant help thinking these are a tad steep, when there's 6-7 years between the cars (996 to 997),
I suppose I should just bite the bullet and get one, even if I decide to change in a year or two, I wont be losing that much on it (if anything if current trends persist)..

I think you're spot on. The gap between 997T and 996T has closed to the extent that its difficult to justify a 6T unless you prefer them anyway or if your budget doesn't allow the few thousand pounds. I must admit I'm struggling a bit with the money having seen the small gap to a 997 now.. not that I want a 997, I want a 996, but cant help thinking these are a tad steep, when there's 6-7 years between the cars (996 to 997),
