I initially read this thread as my OPC warranty runs out in a couple of weeks and can't be renewed as the car is too old (2006) I thought that it would be a good idea before then to have a final check over before going it alone or trying a 3rd party alternative. As well as the 111 point check, I asked for a boroscope inspection.

Just heard that the initial result is "significant" scoring in the first two cylinders checked (nos. 6 and 5) so looks like at least a rebuild or possible replacement, depending on what the strip down reveals.
With no visual clues - sooted left hand pipes or excessive smoking??

Sooting actually an early sign - at least in ours. Not surprising given it is simple an indicator of more oil being burned on that side so tips look less shiny. Started to happen at 3000 miles from new on my wife's 997.

Very little to be honest. The engine has always been really good for oil consumption although this had started to go up slightly but still within what most seem to be acceptable.

As far as over-revs go, it had one event in range 3 from before I bought the car in 2010. In 2013, when Porsche changed their warranty rules to include a compression check for range 3, it passed this and so got another waaranty. Last year, as there were no more over-revs, it did not need the compression check again, and so it was renewed with just the normall 111 point check. Total mileage is 35,500 from new.

Is it that the 997 engine goes kaput if you don't rag the arse off it? It does seem the more well cared for the car and lack of ragging, the more chance it suffers from bore scoring etc.

I can just see the sales headline coming up for a second hand 997.

'997, been raced to within an inch of its life since new, always taken to the redline from cold, guaranteed 100% reliable'. smile

That's a fantastic result. Many are sceptical about the value of the OPC Warranty but it's the best the the business.
Being slighltly cynical - you could argue it has *had* to be!

Either Porsche has a warranty scheme that covers what is now proven to be a flawed engine design, or it faces a LOT of bad press as a result of customer legal action.

Perhaps ominously though we're going to see more and more M97 engines that are 10 yrs old+ and no longer warranty eligable...

Finally picking up my car tomorrow smile

The warranty has covered everything (well over £10k apparantly) apart from fluids, which is a bit bizarre, but to be honest I'm just grateful to have dodged such a massive hit.
