Hi guys,

So my boyfriend has just bought a 911 and his 30th is coming up. I was thinking of maybe buying him something car related. My brother suggested a painting of the car (it's very special to him as it's his first car!), my parents were thinking of buying Porsche cufflinks... Are these ideas really lame and tacky? I am looking for the opinion/advice of a petrolhead as I most definitely am not one. I was thinking of a speed camera detector but these seem to be quite pricey and I have no idea if they are any good. Open to all ideas - your thoughts are much appreciated.

What model 911 and what’s your budget?

I got Jag cufflinks just after I bought my XJS and still can’t decide if they’re tacky or cool cool

Hi Lulabella

I agree with PTT. I don't know how far you are from Silverstone but the courses at the Porsche Experience Centre (PEC) are useful and cheaper (and IMO more useful) if you use your own car. You can go too and have a half-decent 3-course meal together in their panoramic restaurant. Not sure of your budget but perhaps your parents and others can chip in? And if you are far away, there's a Premier Inn about a mile away too, so you can have a short break and he can treat you back!

The cufflinks will be okay if he goes to Porsche/car events, otherwise they'll probably live in a drawer. I tend to wear my Porsche lapel badge and "accessories" when I go to events like The Goodwood Revival. If you wear them to a wedding, say, and another guest clocks them, you have to decide whether you want them to know you have a 911 or it's something you'd like "one day"... Same for wearing them to work/business.

If you give up on the 'big' Porsche present idea and want something cheaper, if he likes fashion, have a look at Magnus Walker's urban outlaw shop - he does cool T-shirts etc and ships to the UK. He's quite 'relevant' at the moment - especially if his car is air-cooled (older than 1998/9).

Good luck and let us know afterwards what he thought!

Um, I don't know the model. He only speaks to me about Porsches every night before we fall asleep. You'd think I'd know :-p Makes for good dozing material though. Does the model impact gift ideas? Ha.

He went on and on about a track day. I bought him a supercar experience that was in my budget and included a 911 but he never used it and it just expired :-/

Is an ice cube tray a bit of a let down for a 30th gift from your OH? Haha. I saw them myself and thought they were cool though.

Will check out the clothes link etc.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I got a friend a nice set of 4 espresso cups from the local Porsche dealer, all different retro/motorsport. I actually really liked them myself too and he was pleased with them. Depends if he's into coffee I suppose. About £70.

I think the pressure gauge idea is quite good. You can buy ones that inflate the tyre too, can't you?
He bought himself a nice watch that I couldn't really compete with. I bought a coffee machine for him before so espresso cups are quite fitting. Nice thought from your girlfriend regarding the keyring. I already bought him a bottle opener key ring so his keys are quite chunky. What do you get a man who has everything?!

Thanks for all of the great ideas. What about ideas that aren't Porsche related? What sort of gifts would you all like to receive?

A day out here would be my choice - you'll find that he'll be glad you 'forced' him to go later.......

Well, this is okay:

...but all things considered I'd rather have the Porsche one.

Depending on which car he has it may have come with a pressure gauge and/or a compressor (inflation pump powered from cigarette lighter), so perhaps not ideal.

Have a look on Porsche's website www.porsche.com/UK and look for Driver's Collection to see lots of ideas. I don't think you can purchase online but any Porsche dealer's Parts Department can get anything for you.

I wouldn't buy him a trackday, as he didn't use his last 'experience day' - safer bet is to buy something physical that you can present to him on the day. perhaps a nice Porsche book for his coffee table? then he can read that before he goes to sleep, and save boring you to sleep regaling tales of Porsche ownership. and also a nice natty Porsche leather cover for his i-phone, something he will touch everyday and remind him of you !

It's my 40th next month and my sisters asked what to get me. I've asked for a years membership to The official Porsche owners club.

It says you get a monthly magazine (reading material sorted), 10% of servicing and parts at the dealer (could be useful)I think and access to club meets, so some good days out.

I think it's about £70 and could be really useful.

I would not buy anything related to any of his interests, that you don't also share interest in. Except an item he might specifically have asked for.

I always feel those presents feel contrived, and very rarely is it something I would have actually bought myself..

Or is it just me?
