Hi,

I picked up my 2006 Cayman S yesterday. I'm loving the car so far.

It has the PCM 2.1 with Bose but as far as I can see it doesn't have an iPod or aux input. It does have two CD slots in the glovebox. Can I add an iPod input to this? If so, which model is generally regarded as the best?

Secondly, I'm quite impressed by the sat nav, but the maps are 9 years old now! My road isn't even on there! Can I buy updated maps? What would I pay for this? Is it a DVD?

Thanks,

Dan

I'm getting a 987 Boxster S in a week or so, also fitted with Bose and PCM 2.1, so I'm interested in this too. I'd prefer a USB connector, but iPod would do the job if it's cheaper.

When faced with the same problem in my BMW E61, I fitted a Dension Gateway, which works perfectly. It costs £350 (although I found a used one on eBay for a lot less), and emulates a CD changer. The version that I fitted to the Beemer replaces the CDC, but I beleive Dension now sell a version that allows the CDC to be retained (dual FOT version). If your car doesn't have a CDC, or you aren't bothered about using it, the single FOT version is a little cheaper.
If you don't have a CDC, it will need to be coded by a Porsche dealer or specialist. Apparently BMW dealers are reluctant to code something that isn't in the car, not sure how OPCs react to this?

If there are any cheaper options that allow proper integration of an iPod or USB device with PCM and a MFSW, I'd be interested in hearing about them.

Oasi interface coupled with a parrot mki kit....I've had Denison and mobridge in my previous 996's/997's and found this solution much better and more user friendly. Just so happens I traded my 996 last week and removed it and it's for sale on eBay just now.....

The two CD slots in the glovebox are simple cd storage holders.

Does this kit display track info on the PCM and dashboard displays, and does it work with the steering wheel buttons?

Hi, no it completely overrides the PCM and displays all track info on the pareot screen and is controlled by the wireless remote. The PCM screen continues to display any selected display. All of the others I've used before (mobridge/dension) fool the PCM into thinking the interface is a CDC and require much button pressing (or at least my ones did!)

Ok. The system I had in my BMW and my girlfriends Golf displayed all the song info on both screens and I was able to change songs with the steering wheel controls. I think is rather it did that.

I wonder how tricky it is to select tracks on the PCM unit? It's pretty straightforward using BMW's iDrive control and screen. Unless PCM is stupidly difficult to use, I'd go with the Dension too.

I've had my 987S for a few days now, and I'm not impressed with the fact that the steering wheel next/previous buttons don't change tracks without pressing other buttons first. Also seems crazy that the dash display can't handle track name, just numbers (I'm using an mp3 CD in the dash slot), but the PCM display shows all the details correctly.

Fitting a new head unit isn't really an option, as a lot of the car's options are controlled by the PCM unit (lights, locks, auto wipers, etc.)

My local installer doesn't like the Dension Gateway, he recommended the Parrot solution, for £480 including an interface box. One thing he couldn't explain: How well does it integrate with the PCM?
In particular, if I am listening to the radio, and want to switch to using the Parrot for mp3 on a USB stick, what do I press? If I am listening to mp3 using the parrot, will I still get the nav messages and reverse sensor beeps through the speakers?
The Dension unit emulates the CDC, so all the other functions will work as normal. Is the same true of the Parrot (apart from it having it's own display and track buttons)?

The parrot just takes control when you hit play on the remote. When you press stop it reverts to whatever the PCM was set to. Unless the Denison has come on leaps and bounds since I had my gateway the parrot is much more user friendly to use. I also had a mobridge (which is also a CDC emulator) and it was just about as bad, really fiddly to select and play music.

I've also got Dension in my Cayenne. As already mentioned, it means you get to keep steering wheel controls and PCM display for tracks.
I like it enough that I'm planning to get one fitted to the Vantage I bought at the weekend.

So you don't get nav messages when the parrot is playing?

Davek

Does the Dension remember what track it was playing when you switch it off, and resume at that point when you switch the head unit back on?
The Dension in my E61 works this way, but the PCM in my 987 seems to start playing CD mp3 tracks randomly. Just wondering if the Dension will work properly with PCM.

Honest answer is I can't remember checking that functionality. I only very rarely used my PCM sat nav.

A couple of questions about how the Dension works with PCM and MFSW:

Does the steering wheel next/prev control allow you to skip tracks directly whenever you are playing from a USB stick, or do you have to select the file list menu from the PCM first?

Does the BT phone option work properly with the MFSW buttons, allowing you to answer calls, if you are listening to USB?
My car has the Porsche phone module, which is working OK using a PAYG SIM in the PCM. I have seen various opinions on this, ranging from "the Dension BT works fine", to "it works fine, but I get a phone error message each time I start the car", to "I have to select the BT phone option in the Gateway menu on the PCM before I can answer a call"

Some have said it is OK to leave the Porsche phone module connected, some say it has to be looped out of the MOST bus, some say it has to be looped out and removed from the PCM options using PIWIS, some say if it is removed using PIWIS, the MFSW buttons won't work.

I've also read that functionality depends on where it is installed in the MOST bus. There seem to be 3 options of where to install the Dension - in the front luggage compartment, behind the PCM, and under the seat in place of the phone module.

All very confusing!
