This understeer being banished comment seems to be perpetual and to the independent observer makes think the 911 still has a problem that has been glossed over. As people say Chris will be writing about the next one finally banishing it.... again

I get the feeling that this has far too much grip for mere mortals and once again will polarise the community into feelsome older cars and eye-ball bursting new cars.

Imagine in 5 years time when you can buy a Porsche branded G-Suit in the same colour as your car.

265 / 325 Michelin cup 2's .. sorry it's gone too far. People buying them on here will not have balls big enough to even make them sweat on the road.

Mind you, good investment wink

LOL.... agree with you though.

Basically, unless you are using the RS (and to a lesser extent the 'normal' GT3), you are kidding yourself if you thinking you are getting anywhere near the full experience unless you're on track regularly.

I was blown away by the front end grip on the GT3 when i was at Brands the other week.

Agree with this ....what is this RS actually for ?. Seriously. Where, unless on a track, can you actually use this thing ?.

Look at it...Monstrous tyres and aero with an even larger turbo body. It looks awful too IMO.

My GT3 is big enough, more than fast enough and difficult to unsettle unless at warp speeds on a track. Drifting a corner at 120 +...I'm not good enough so no thanks.

As a road car out for a Sunday thrash through the hills, its good....but I reach for the keys of the 73 every time, as I did last Sunday as that is epic.

Why ?...because its more 'fun' on this type of road....way, way more fun.

In that case, the same applies to the 991 gt3 that so many wax lyrical about surely? Like the RS, it is monstrously quick with vast amounts of grip and not exactly small by any means....scratchchin

Spot on. I suspect we're talking about degrees of difference here, not revolutionary differences. And aren't they both the same width at their extremities (mirrors) anyway? Making the turbo bodied point a touch moot.

I suspect the 3 and 3 RS won't be that different on the road, and any major driving differences will only manifest themselves on a track.

Hence why the GT4 exists. Porsche have to have a halo car that beats the competition, whereas the GT4 doesn't have to be so much about lap time. Or you, you can get just an older GT3.

FWIW though, if i could have traded the GT3 im for an RS, i would have.

The point he's making about the extra wide body is that it may be the same width across the mirrors, but it's the rear wheels, not the mirrors, that end up clipping the kerbs. I don't notice it jumping from C2S to C4S, but some complain of it.

If I could have traded my 991 GT3 for a 991 GT3 RS, that would have been entirely 'investment' driven as the base GT3 is likely to be much better suited to my needs (and in my opinion looks better too!).

I for one am buying one to track only. I have a Merc CL65 AMG for road driving, a Q7 for family trips, a BMW 130i for nipping around town, and an S Works Camber for mountains. The new RS just seems like the perfect track machine and I cannot wait to start learning it's full capabilities.

No moaning and whining from me about its size, grip, power, aero, road manners etc. Blah Blah bring it on.

Very informative road test from Andrew Frankel in Autocar:

http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/porsche/911-gt...

""Should I buy one?:
It depends. This is not an easy car to drive extremely fast and if you’re not going to drive it extremely fast there would seem to be little point in having one. It is a car that will challenge you as a driver and, I have no doubt at all, be not in the least shy about punishing mistakes. A standard GT3 is a far more forgiving car and for many who want that every day ability but don’t need the on-limit nuttiness, it is by far the better choice.

But while there remains a small constituency of drivers ready, willing and able to make the effort and happy to get out only what they put in, so they will revel and delight in the experience offered by the GT3 RS on the track. That it will also prove so superbly civilised all the way home is perhaps its most remarkable facet of all.

In short, and for anything approaching the money, nothing else even gets close.""

That's what the GT2 was for, why'd they have to ruin the GT3?

From the article -

""Instead of being deliberately conservative with your entry speeds and guiding it into the corner, you fling it in on a trailing throttle deliberately too fast, trusting in the tyre, the car’s inherent balance and the agility of its four-wheel steering system to cope""

That is completely counter to everything one has ever been taught to do by professional 911 drivers surely...? Even on the Cup cars with much more front tyre, I was told only recently on the 991 Cup you still always turn in on the brakes.

Chuck a car into a corner (on trailing throttle to boot) awfully quick and trust the car's systems to sort itself out - that's what one does in the GT-R....
