Hello all,

I recently bought myself a 991 911 Turbo, my very first foray into the world of Porsche. In fact I hadn't really considered one before, this was a bit of an impulse buy (saw one in a dealer on the Monday and picked it up on the Friday!). Really pleased with the car so far, it is fantastic. Having come across from a Maserati Granturismo S, the one thing that I do miss is the noise. Not that the 911 noise isn't good, it really is. It's just the Maserati noise is something else (although it is a bit misleading if you were to do a noise versus pace comparison). In my opinion this is the only area in which the Maserati is a better car, and luckily it is one that can potentially be remedied!

My question is, has anyone upgraded to an aftermarket exhaust on their 991 Turbo? Any recommendations at all? And does doing this invalidate the warranty?

I have seen a few videos on YouTube but was keen for some first hand advice!

Many thanks in advance.
Save your money for replacement tires.... just sayin

I did a BBI exhaust system on my 991 Turbo S and it was all smiles until I drove on the Hwy cruising between 2,000-2,800 rpm in 7th the drone was eating my brain.
I installed the stock system and felt as though I bought a new adult car once again....So much better to be able to listen to the stereo and have a conversation.
No matter what the slight power gains are you won't feel it while driving.....
If someone says his new stupid money aftermarket exhaust system does not drone, that guy is just lying through his teeth....

I have a less than 1,000 mi. BBI exhaust for sale.....cheap

Here is a in car video/sound with the window down. You can hear the tone of the exhaust along with the annoying after a while off-throttle popping...
Ask for a in car sound clip at varying sustained RPM while cruising down the Hwy before you make a mistake that will just piss you off..

Keep her above 3000 RPM lol. OP BBI exhaust is a quality bit of kit too. Drone is very subjective. I bought a Europipe and the guy that makes them warned me that the loud version I wanted drones between 2600 and 2800 rpm. Honestly its never bothered me and I've never noticed it.. I've driven a stock 991 turbo S for a weekend and I found the stock exhaust had drone lol! The fake popping on overrun is ridiculous. You should hear the new na engines - exhausts sound like machine guns on overrun on Boxsters , Caymans, Carreras etc.

Indeed, but the best bit about the oem system IMO is that it can be switched on and off so you can be as gown up or otherwise as the mood takes you. Whilst not in the same league as a 991 T I actually really quite like the oem note with the sports exhaust on my boxster, but really appreciate being able to turn it off too.

OEM system for 991 T doesn't have valves and is not switchable between loudness modes.

Exactly, this is why only 991 Turbo owners with first hand experience should comment on their noise makers..

Exhaust note changes noticeably in Sport + mode and can have quite a drone mid rev range.

It seems nearly everyone who buys a 996/997/991 turbo asks the same question.

As I understand it there really is no simple solution - if there was the Porsche would offer it.

There seem to be a range of 'after market' options all of questionable merit - some swear by them, others spend a lot of money and are still disappointed. My view with Turbos is it's the nature and character of the engine - it's very fast but it will never sound as good as a normally aspirated engine.

Good thread resurrection! As mental as it sounds, I only kept the Turbo a few months and have since had a Panamera Diesel, RS7, M6 and soon a Range Rover. Keep changing my mind and haven't quite found anything that ticks every box....

I didn't find any solution to this that wouldn't void the warranty, and given it was brand new at the time that wasn't an option. As someone has stated below there are quite a few after market options, but I didn't get further than watching a few videos on YouTube which were inconclusive for me.

Best of luck finding something!

I'm not totally agree with you, becuase the end it is an engine as you said, so it can be modified or tuned etc.... and give you the louder sound you want even by removing some unwanted parts or whatever.
