I don't think 997 prices will govern 996 prices, the cars are after-all different enough. There are two reasons people believe a 997 is 'infinitely better' than a 996 - The headlights & the interior. Both are cosmetic and a matter of opinion. When the 997 was new and just released it made the 996 look old to some/most, now both are old and I actually believe the 996 is ageing better, especially the interior
I agree, a lot of people seem to be thinking the 996 looks cleaner & purer than the 997 now they are both getting on a bit. Just a shame my 3.4 996 isn't an earlier car on ambers, may have to wait a bit longer for it to be 'desirable'...!Adam B said:

Yes that's my opinion, I'm sure plenty of others prefer the 997. Point is the majority of reasons for preference between the two is cosmetic which is down to the personal choice, so I don't see 997 prices affecting 996'sEdited by shantybeater on Friday 19th June 16:01

Agree with you that the differences a largely cosmetic although for the model I was after it included a meaningful 60bhp increase. I am not a 996 hater, indeed I was initially looking to buy a 996 turbo, I do think the 997 is prettier and I prefer the rear spoiler of the 7t, but the interior is streets ahead - IMHO obviously. In terms of impacts on value I think it is more meaningful to judge the views of those who don't currently a 996 or 997

Yes I do. The 964 was not popular until quite recently, your car is clearly worth more than £16k & 997's are not infinitely more desirable than 996's, this may be my personal opinion however.
Lot's of people on here with far more knowledge than me believe 996 prices are, or will, rise.
You're dead right IMHO. I'm old enough to remember how derided the 964 was. I'm also old enough to to remember when the SC was looked down on by 3.2 owners. Lot's of people on here with far more knowledge than me believe 996 prices are, or will, rise.
I think that the 996 has a way to go before an 18k miles non S trades for £26k. So I'd take that offer...

Couldn't put it better myself...over ten years in a '99 996 manual and now in my third year of 997 ( gen2) . The later car is faster, corners better, stops better and ...my wife loves it. As an everyday car the 997 is a great all rounder...if it's the better drivers car an early 996 ( for all of the above) takes the beans.anonymous said:

I'd probably agree with you there - I also have a BMW z4M which on the face of it are better than better than Z3M - even the one with the S54 - and have to say I'd always assumed that Z4M prices would cap Z3s but that doesn't seem the case. Also with E36 M3s - always unloved and overshadowed by E46 M3s - surprise surprise they seem to be coming out of the doldrums and the good ones are rising in value. As you say, as the cheaper 996s disappear, the good ones will retain their value and rise. Thanks for the views.
I tend to agree that the 996 is underrated. I love the thing. Even the looks have held their own and maybe even improved a little with age. Mines a facelift so no fried eggs.
Also benefits from sports chassis, full carbon, Bose, polar, PSE and a carrera aerokit from new.
I guess the question is whether it's going to ever be worth significantly more than 26k....

Not really. The only question that matters is what would you do with the £26k? If you have your eye on another car which may also appreciate then it sort of neutralises that area of concern. The ole cost to change thing.RT

I'd buy a 60k mile early 996 and pocket at least £14k and not worry about having to keep the mileage down. Job done...Check out the estimate here....
