I've previously owned a 996.2C2 and loved it. Since having a brief foray into AMG ownership I now fancy getting back into a Porsche and am in the market for a 997 Gen 2. Spec wise all I want is manual and a sports exhaust. But my question is will a non S version be fast enough or am I just going to wish that I bought the S version?

Fast enough to keep my interest.

What keeps your interest? I have 20 year old slow Porsche and its never boring.

What tweaks your nipples?

I don't know, but I bought the S, just in case.

Well I do like performance and found the C63 I had very good but just not a sports car. My previous 996 was a better car for sure. I'd love an "old" Porsche but prices are too strong for me at the moment. I get my low speed fixes by using an Austin 7 which I bought a few weeks ago. 30mph is scary fast!

Actually I think it's character which does it for me.

Austin 7? I'd doff my hat if I had one!

Vanilla Carrera will be just dandy. If you can drive that around at 100% of its capability then you are a far better driver than I am. And probably suicidal too.

From your modest spec requirement it sounds as though you want a pure 911 experience driving and so I expect you will find the 997.2 C2 fast enough on the road. I did drive both but bought an S because I wanted the higher spec more than the extra grunt. From 0-70MPH I didn't notice the difference in BHP.

I had a 997.2 C2 manual for four years , you'll not be disappointed with the performance or the car in general.

I think there is a general opinion that the C2S is far better , but maybe some who profess that opinion haven't had the benefit of driving both.

If in doubt road test both.

I attended a recent track day and on the straights ( where cars are using max revs & acceleration) my 3.6 997 gen 2 pulled away slowly from a gen one S . Conversely a gen 2 S pulled away slowly from me . Not talking about one lap here either , as happened repeatedly. On the road I don't think a massive noticeable difference. The 3.6 does rev sweetly but best to drive both and see if the £5k difference is worth it to you. Good luck with your choice.

They feel a bit faster than the 997.1 or 996.1 that I've owned. Plus you can sit back and relax and not worry about engine rebuilds.

Are there any reliability issues with these Gen 2 3.6 engines? They've been around for 6 years now so I would have thought that major issues would have come to light by now.

I can't seem to find much in way of review on them, other than a Chris Harris video of him driving a PDK convertible, think it needs a decent exhaust on it to improve the sound.

Values seem to be bottoming out in early 30k's, do people think they will go much lower? Thinking it might be a good long term keeper for me.

Probably as reliable as the 3.8 Gen 2.

PSE and Sharkwerks bypass would liberate the sound.

Pretty friendly with my local OPC technician , his hands on info...3.6 engine very ,very reliable with none of the bore scoreing/996 early 997 problems. However the engine mounted brake booster pump corrodes over time , leaks and needs replacement . Other 997 items worth checking.... aluminium water cross pipes at the front of car deteriorate and cause leaks , brake lines corrode , AC condensors don't last long before leaking. These last few items are appearing more regular , especially on older cars ,mostly due to poor material spec allowing early onslaught of corrosion. It's not game changing but repairs can be labour intensive so charges mount quickly. As a daily 911 the 3.6 is a no brainier , plenty around so don't suppose it will ever increase in value like the air cooled cars so no need to be too precious about it....have an early morning blast every two weeks and you'll think you made the right choice....

The DFI's are looking good so far. I think we can say with utter certainty that they are way more resolved than the M96/97 motors.

I've just landed a 997.2 3.6 manual. Had to pay extra for the dealer fit PSE, but I just had to.
Seems plenty fast enough to me. Has a good hit of torque and builds nicely at the top end. Given the amount of time you'll actually spend at full beans there is little difference on the road.
You can also feel smug about your low road tax and 30mpg laugh
Both DFI engines could do with more fizz and the PSE helps, but neither quite goes off like you'd want.

Drive both, and don't pussy around when you do. Drive them how you intend to and ignore the salesman.

These DFI engines are nice, but I have to say the standard exhaust note is a bit disappointing. Easy to live with but so muted you can hardly hear it! I have the 3.8 and power is sufficient for me, but wouldn't really want any less. Haven't driven the DFI 3.6, but did have a 996 C2 and that felt quick enough in the real world. So I suspect the DFI 3.6 is okay too as long as you keep well away from driving the 3.8! Then again I recently drove a 991 GTS and didn't really notice the extra power on the road. These are all quick cars on any road with corners and traffic.

The thing is theres so much psychology at play with speed.

I drove a 991GTS and it was fast, of course it was. But, it didnt shock me or make me swear. It was just so easy and without drama. Maybe thats it?

I was fairly disappointed to be honest, I was expecting that 'jesus I gotta myself one of these!' moments, but no.

Its not about outright speed (however you want to measure that), its the feeling of speed and maybe how close you are to it? Its that plugged in danger element that is difficult to measure.

Drive an old 80bhp mini hard and you get that kick. Its not about numbers!
