Just finding your relentless manual vs PDK comments tedious now as I'm sure many others are too.

Have to agree on manual.

My ideal 997 (to use everyday) is a 2wd, manual, GTS.

I have a 997.1 C2S, which I love and have owned for 4 years now. The longest I've owned the same car and my second Porsche.

The PDK in the 991 on the other hand is perfect for the car. 7 speed manual box is just stupid.

I don't want tiptronic, I'm fairly fairly sure on this

In this forum's opinion, which is the one to go for?

Less-money-higher-miles, or top-of-budget newer car?

Bearing in mind £5,000 is a lot of money between the top and bottom of this/my particular market
Thought I'd quote OP's original message as we seem to be getting into another manual versus PDK debate!

OP says he doesn't want tiptronic and as he hadn't considered Gen 2 presumably had excluded PDK too?

What OP didn't tell us is whether this is a daily driver or weekend hooner. Assuming the latter, my opinion: 997.2 C2 Manual.

I think this is a very good point, I have a 997.1 and absolutely love it, it's a C2s but I do think they probably make more sense when a bit older not as a daily drive, I have had mine for a couple of months but will do the temp sensor, third radiator etc etc before I drive it properly and then I will change oil regularly with Miller oil and all that. If I had wanted a daily drive I would have probably gone for a 997.2 3.6, or a Cayman, think you probably can use a 997.1 daily no problem but takes a bit of care and knowledge

Daily driver. Mostly A roads, not much motorway. Annual mileage 7-8,000.

It's Cumbria, so I have access to some of the best A roads available, but 50% of the time I'm going to be doing 25 min trips of 12 miles or so. I tried a PDK at Newcastle Porsche and back to back test drove a manual 997 C2. This made my mind up: I don't want any form of auto gearbox. Maybe I'm wrong, but it's my cash.

This Gen2 C2 PDK thing is really above my budget. If I had £35k to spend, it would be easy, but for the purposes of working to a budget, £30k is the top whack.

In a year or two I plan on trading in and buying a 2009+ car, which will by then be reachable and I will only have had to manage/suffer 12-24 months of a Gen1 car. At which point I'm slightly stymied, because the dude at Newcastle Porsche said 80% of Gen2s are PDK and 93% of 991s.

Ouch. I like PDK but I struggle to understand how many people could put up with those god-awful buttons.I had a 987 boxster PDK as a loaner about 5 years ago and it p1ssed me off no end. Paddles or manual for me thanks

Not sure that's right. I bought a manual Gen 2 C2S and there are plenty around. Certainly more PDKs but no way 80:20. You'll save a bit of cash as they sell for a bit less at the moment.

It's ironic that the stalwarts and pioneers of auto transmissions (read USA) prefer manuals in their Porsches and consequently outsell PDKs.

Well I'm glad it wasn't me who started off the manual vs pdk yawnfest. It's been done to death enough times not to require yet another repeat.

Cmoose, I'm considering a manual 997 II, taking price out of the equation why is the regular c2 a nicer steer than the S?

I'm sure cmoose will have his own take on it but imho it is about the money.

In the sense that a boggo C2 will provide 95% of the experience at say 80% of the cost - it's a better value proposition and therefore potentially a sweet-spot in the range. It will also feel plenty fast enough if you are coming from a 'normal' car.

If identical C2 and C2S cars were listed at identical prices you'd take the S every time however.

uhuh, I think mine is probably the more representative view. Your position on all this is rather, erm, niche would you not agree?

Spot on. There's nothing overtly "flashy" about the S. It's just got a bit more power. Both are quite understated cars in this class, which is one of the reasons I like them so much. Limited to £30K I'd be more than happy with the standard spec too, but I'd rather be driving the 'S' and wouldn't feel in the slightest bit contrived.

Wow, what a great looking car. I'm very envious.

Presumably this car would be way out of the £30-35k budget discussed in this thread? I have been looking at 997's too, but would prefer air-cooled if it was in that sort of condition. Anyone know what a realistic budget would need to be for something like this?
