Really enjoyed tinkering with a car again this weekend; 1981 911 SC in Guards Red.

A trip through the New Forest with everybody (seriously everybody) staring at the car, whether on the move or parked up.

The smell of petrol along with old car charms - handbrake spring snapped :-).

Gave the old girl a clay bar treatment today, I can't imagine it's ever been done. The paint work now feels like glass. The amount of crud on the clay bar was ridiculous.

For me it's a strange post when somebody queries air-cooled vs water cooled purchase. They're so different, I'd never have this car as a daily, complete PITA. But, for a weekend in summer, it's wonderful, truly wonderful.

Managed to source some second hand fog lights to be fitted shortly, thanks for the advice from PHers to use impact bumpers for for that.

The rear bumper looks like it's had some paint at some point recently - the garage didn't remove the tape over the black rubber between the bumper and rear wing :-). Removed now but see picture.

JMG are looking after the old girl now. Looks, drives and sounds better each time I see it.

Question - why does going into second gear make such a 'thunk'? No grinding etc, just a big thunk.

It's funny to read posts about people not using these as a daily driver.

All my ex and present aircooled go 'thunk' into second, especially from cold.

It kind of goes into second, then you have to pull it a bit further, then thunk.

If they all do it, it's one thing off the list. Thanks!

Doesn't sound right. Are we talking 1st to 2nd or 3rd to 2nd. Either way, change might be sedate, but should be smooth yet positive

Hi, it can be either, however the noise is quieter once warmed up - 15 mins of driving

Check the clutch cable adjustment, most people (including most garages) don't know how to adjust them properly. Mine did the "thunk" thing into 2nd until Francis Tuthills checked it over and adjusted the clutch cable - 5 min job. Now it's fine. I guess the clutch wasn't fully releasing before. I've had a similar thing on my other 915 box Porsches so not unusual.

Great car, but I struggle with the rear spoiler. Ruins the car IMO, but well aware others love it.
This is how I prefer mine

Agree it looks better without the tail, but it's not just for show. The tail doesn't ruin the car, it just ruins the looks wink The slightly more subtle C3.2 tail looks better on the SC and makes a better compromise. Ducktails look good too if you're not too fussed about originality. I've never been happy with the high speed stability without a tail on one of these cars, so that's never been a viable option for me. But I agree the Turbo tail just doesn't look right on a narrow bodied car like the SC. Although if you go to 8" or 9" rears to fill the arches it looks a lot better too. Reminds me that I need to get rid of the Turbo tail on mine too!

Ebay find in CAL!!! Body is 100% solid, came with a tricked out engine, new SSI, upgraded suspension, 964 brakes and the RSR copy bumpers

Spent a few quid making it a Magnus Walker rip off.

Its loud and pretty quick, and handles really well for a 36 year old car on crap tyres!

You either hate these or leave these modified cars!

I like the spoiler best from the side and front 3/4 angle as looks like a 930.

De-spoilered also looks good but not a duck tale :-(.

Car is my Father In-Laws hence buying fog lights and giving it a clay bar in return for drinking all his wine :-)

Is that the same car? Has a different tail in this photo i.e. C3.2 tail which does look quite a lot better on the SC than the Turbo tail.

yes sorry but whale tail looks so wrong on anything other than turbos, where the flared arches and wide wheels keep it in proportion. Appreciate the stability point - at what speed does a non-spoiler car have lift issues?

(I would remove spoiler and drive slower personally)
