Oil Level on 2004 C4S
Discussion
Gents,
I’ve borrowed a 2004 C4S (c3k miles) for a week or so and when I filled it up today, the car said to check the oil levels. The dipstick registers oil up to the first mark. My initial reaction was to put a litre of oil into it, but I just wanted to make sure that these were not dry sump motors. From who I gather, these cars use oil when new, right?
Where should the oil level be? (NB I don’t have the owner’s manuals)
Apologies for my complete ignorance here, but I have never spent time with a Porsche before and don’t want to chuff up a £60k motor through ignorance.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You should put Oil in,
The warning comes up when the mimimum marker is reached as a safety reminder.
Aswell as using the dipstick, you should have a computer oil level readout on the instrument panel, this is quite accurate, and a lot less messy to deal with. The car needs to be warm and level in order to do this.
P.S. not sure exactly how much oil to put in, but make sure that you give enough time for what you do put in to work its way in, in order for it to register. It is very important not to overfill

Thanks Glenn.
I did the Computer read out, and it flashed just the bottom bar on the indicator. I'll put half a ltr in tomorrow morn, and see what happens. I would imagine a ltr would be fine, but as you say, I dont want to overfill. "thanks for the loan of the motor....it smokes its t1ts off for some reason!"
As for Oil, any suggestions?
Thanks for your help.

you need to be at 1/2 to 3/4 level ideally, no fuller.
when mine was at full level, i went on a run through snowdonia with a couple of other porkers. We had been travelling quickly around several left/right bends when all of a sudden a massive cloud of oil smoke came out of the back. apparrently this is due to overfilling the oil and it spilling over and being drawn through the cylinders - it was bloody scary i can tell you
I find that the warning always comes on after filling up as the oil is warm ie thinner and goes to a lower level than when cold.
