Looking for a little advice! I've just taken possession of a rather lovely 996 C4 cab, slightly leggy at 140k miles but generally in decent nick and pulls like a train, which is clearly the most important thing.

However. Walking back to the car today I noticed what can only be described as two 'things' hanging down in front of the front wheel arches. They don't appear to be doing any harm but equally I've never seen anything like them before and would appreciate if somebody could enlighten me as to their purpose, and indeed if they should just be hanging down or if there is something actually wrong here.

Anybody any ideas ?!

yes it is the fan resistor. They are held onto the shroud by metal clips which have probably rusted through. I'd cable tie it up, don't let it get damaged as they are bloody expensive. The fans are two speed & use the resistor for the low speed setting.

Gotcha, thanks. Will tie them up safely out of harms way as you say!

At least one of those resistors looks to be damaged. If so the low fan speed will not operate on that side so it would be sensible to get them replaced but they are about £100 each (or about £3 each for similar from rs components).
A quick check is to turn on a/c which should start both fans at low speed, of they do not switch on then you have a problem.
The high fan speed setting will operate.

Yes, thanks. The fan not working was noted and has been booked in as part of an overhaul of the air con system next week. That would explain it anyway!
