My first post in the Porsche section I think so be gentle.
My old man gets his new Macan S in October which means he wants me to sell his 2004 Cayenne S. I think I might sell it to myself as I have not scratched the Porsche itch yet but a 3 and 5 yr old means I need a bigger car so this would replace my X5.
Anyway, if you're buying a used car, my old man is the sort you'd want to buy from. It's black with the tan leather He's had it from 6 months old, it's only done 80,000 gentle miles and has a bulletproof Porsche main dealer service history with every receipt and record. It doesn't have the adjustable suspension but at this age, that strikes me as one major thing that never has to go wrong so not worried about that so can any of you chaps in the know, suggest some key things that I should check over, look at before I take the plunge?
Many thanks.

My wife has an 04 Cayenne, we have run it for nearly two years it's the V6 S. It has 80,000 miles or so and we replaced the propshaft last month, which is a common fault on all variants of this floor pan. Other than fluid and filter changes and a couple of bulbs there have been no issues.
Next service will require discs and pads

Thanks guys. I have read a bit about the coolant pipes. Not terribly fussed about disks and pads as that's a job I can do myself.
This one's a V8 S model. Just wondering if there were any major issues such as the fragile gear boxes you find on early 2000s BMW 3.0 Diesels for example. I understand that in general the engines are pretty good.

To be honest, the major points are covered above. Some don't eat tyres, mine didn't, but it did eat the Cardan Shaft. Porsche are not the only suppliers though If you were looking at the open market, I'd probably say go for a Turbo, as they are about the same running costs as both the V6 and the V8. Odd things, cars are.
Only issue you are going to have is price. Don't just check dealers, check sold prices on the Bay etc, as it might be significantly less than your Dad thinks it might be.

I'm thiking about £6.5-7K based on the current adverts and it's missing a couple of the high specd items like the adjustable suspension and NAV system for examples.Only issue you are going to have is price. A quick look on eBay for 2004 Cayenne A, sold, completed items may sadden your Dad, and please you (and kick start the slush fund). 4 to 5 seems more in the ballpark. Which is quite scary, but they tent the most sought after things in the world. Lovely though.
He won't give much of a st about that. I do though Luke. said:
No nav? Ouch. What's in its place?
Am I due a whoosh parrot? It's a bonus not having it. Anything, but anything is better to use these days than 11 year-old factory sat nav with no touch screen.
OP, have you googled the buyers' guides? A chance of expensive piston/liner issues with these V8s. Not enough to put you off your particular purchase, but worth knowing about.
I would expect the coolant pipes have already been replaced on an 04 model , they dont usually last this long.
Propshaft as has been said is another problem although its the centre bearing that fails and that can be changed instead of the whole propshaft.
Sat nav would have 11 year old maps in it so not that usefull an option , the only part i would add is be carefull of the type of tyres fitted.
Dont mix N rated tyres and non N rated on the same axle and try not to have a new tyre fitted to one side with a low tread on the other side , the psm will get upset and can cause gearbox/diff problems.

Have my 2004 S for 8yrs now, came with 43,000 miles, now has 118,000 miles. Carden shaft replaced under extended warranty, no problem from pipes yet, or bores. Very reliable, comfy and useful . I tow my Brian James Race Shuttle , 16.7 MPG and 21mpg year average last year otherwise.
A great car, and a good Porsche, I would not have said this 8 yrs ago !

Guy,
small dig here, but a Cayenne does not count as "scratching the Porsche itch"
no pressure...

Agreed but for a family lugger for a little time....
A 911 would be a third car which I can't afford but I still have the M3 for track which in current spec frankly <dons flame suit> butchers many of Stuttgart's finest.
Cheers to all those who replied.
To resurrect. I held my breath and bought it. So much car for little cash I couldn't not. Very happy at the moment as it's my first Porsche. It's aboslutely minty mint as well with full PDSH, all bills, spare set of wheels with winter tyres. Black with tan leather and BOSE. Shall be changing the head unit to something more modern that can connect with iphone etc. but that's about it.
God it's thirsty!

Well done, sounds like a nice car.
I had a 05 S for a couple of years and it was a brilliant car. I managed 21mpg on odd occasions, but if you use the engine it drinks like Gazza on a night out with Jimmy 5 bellies!
The only other thing to watch for is a slight misfire, the early ignition coils (8 separate coils) tended to crack and cause a hesitation/misfire. I think there has been a number of updates, costs about 300 pounds for all coils and plugs to be replaced.
Enjoy, I do miss mine......

No mis-fire apparent but shall look out for it. Old man literally just had it serviced a couple of weeks before I picked it up with some new brake disks as well so should be dandy for now.I had a 05 S for a couple of years and it was a brilliant car.
