I have a 996, 612 and 1967 merc sl in the collection, none of which attracts such loyalty.

????
A nice collection. smile

I can imagine for non-car people and particularly teenagers, the 993 strikes a nice balance - in comparison, the 996 is just a slightly old modern car, the Ferrari too flashy and the Merc a bit too showy.

The 993 has a bit of everything but not too much - a bit cool, a bit old, not too big, classy but understated.

Or, it's the one of your cars that your kids are hoping you'll let them have when they get their licence!

I think you've hit the nail on the head.

I'm amazed what kids think about certain cars; Boxsters are for girls, 996's are cheap, Merc SL's are for old men, Ferraris for Footballers, BMW's for flash people. I think they are all superb cars, but my teenage son and his crew wouldn't be seen dead in any of them. Quite happy to bomb around in the wife's MX5 which Hammond says is the best sports car he's ever driven.

Top Gear has a lot to answer for.
