996 Turbo to DB9 or V8V

Dave964 hits the nail on the head. 2 different cars, silly comparing. And, in truth the
996 can be a little uninvolving, however try a 7T that is even more diluted. Its more a
buzz/thrill thing, lets be serious, the Aston looks amazing, looks like more money,
more sophisticated and mature, sounds incredible out the box, amazing value for money
really at the price.
A 911 Turbo is a drivers car for an acceleration junky, get a properly tuned car and
once you get brave enough to explore it you will never look at fast cars the same again.
It is a bit pointless though for many people, you need the road for them, and not many
people have that road, in rural Scotland there is plenty of it, in the North as they
say, we do what we want...
My Golf R would show a clean set of heels to the Aston in any situation, that's not
what it's for, its for your suave bh to step out of with a dinner dress on, and to sit
at Restaurant's infuriating people, think about it........

I think it's fair to say both Aston & Porsche have the racing pedigree behind their cars and if anything Aston currently has the edge over everyone in both GT3 & GT4 cars, just look at what cars dominate British GT

If I've got the Sunburst 964 out for a drive, its less than shrinking violet looks and noise tend to get some positive feedback, mainly from petrol heads over the age of 40 who perhaps appreciate its rarity.
But if you really want to get noticed take a V8 Defender out, it is very rare I manage to get in and out of a petrol station, pub car park, supermarket, etc. without someone admiring it. I took it to an school reunion a few years back and surrounded by the latest Range Rovers, BMW, Mercs, Porsche, etc. It attracted more admiration from Men, Women and Children than anything else.
So if attention is your thing, you can save a fortune by forgetting the Astons and Porsches, get an old Land Rover Defender V8, it's not fast, it's not comfortable, it's not clever, but people love them.

So basically to summarise this thread. If I like speed stick with the 6T, if I wanted to get noticed and have a sense of occasion when I drive get the Aston. Think I need to test drive the DB9 and V8 Vantage and see what I think but parting with the 6T will be very hard to do as I love that car.

If you want men, women and children a like to think you're they're hero, buy a decent Defender. The getting noticed does happen a bit more in the Aston although that is not a positive for me. But yes, if you like the speed and love the car I'd stick with what you have.But, I love my vantage and as I said I have no regrets. It's a very different car to the turbo but it suits me much better and I wouldn't swap back (but should add the caveat that I have other cars to fulfill other roles).

I must admit, that there's a certain type of driving - sort of relaxed burbling, loping along - that the 996tt just cannot 'do' well. I think the limitation is, principally, aural and might even be remedied, but there are some drives where I can see the hearty beat of the V8 would be most welcome.The Red Devil said:

Wouldn't surprise me, the Golf is AWD & power to weight is probably very similar, the V8V is no lightweight (c1700kg).Iceboy

I drove my 996t thru carnwath, biggar, broughton, Devils beeftub and down to Moffat in the borders last weekend. Back up past St Mary's loch, grey mares tail, Innerleithen and back home. Combo of pissing wet rain, dry patches, greasy. For those that know the roads they will know how challenging they really are especially with the four seasons in one day.
On that drive the 995 was truly special. Confidence inspiring, full of feedback and sensitivity and - contrary to what a lot of people say - exciting. Both at low speeds, and high speeds. This is one of my normal routes to get some real thrill from driving and have done it over a few years on my motorbikes; two zx10rs, s1000rr, tuono r and s1000r. 996ts are amazing....I must be one of these over excitable people because I don't get when people say they find them boring and soulless. In fact, I don't believe them :-)

Having owned 996 t for 8 years ,for me never understood the soulless remarks ,coming from a karting background ,the turbo handled so well, even if slow into a corner and applied the gas it would claw its way out with such confidence ,and in the wet such grip ,but different handling cars for different people ,for me I wanted something that went well handled well and not shout when going through town ,the turbo does get noticed, by the people that know of its capabilities the turbo in my opinion has always set the benchmark standard, every motor bike that sits on your tail is waiting for that rear spoiler to raise .

I reckon such comments emanate from 996 GT3 fan-boys trying to justify their (slower) cars. I drove my 996t thru carnwath, biggar, broughton, Devils beeftub and down to Moffat in the borders last weekend. Back up past St Mary's loch, grey mares tail, Innerleithen and back home. Combo of pissing wet rain, dry patches, greasy. For those that know the roads they will know how challenging they really are especially with the four seasons in one day.

Every time I got back in my 996t after driving anything else, I was always impressed by how alive it was to drive, and that it has so much more feedback and soul than 99.9% of other cars on the road. Sure it's not as involving as an atom or Caterham, but then again neither is a GT3.

But to jump from that into a 911, and the steering, feedback, control weights are a league above. Just amazing to drive, the unservoed brakes are slightly odd to get used to, but once acquainted there is nothing quite like them. Have you ever driven a 360 Ferarri? A good mate has one, it's shocking to drive IMHO, & the build quality is laughable!

It feels about 100kg heavier than that. I think it's not a terribly well resolved car, which means it feels its weight more than, say, a 997. Not sure why you are comparing it to the Turbo, as its slower than the NA 997 S.Drove one, thought it was really good. Bought it over the 997 I was looking at. Which shows how different we all are. In my opinion the 360 is a million miles more involving to drive than a 996 turbo, and many many times more fun. They are massively different and as a "fun" car, the turbo doesn't even come a close second for me.Not sure what you mean by build quality either really - mine seems very well built.
