Well I finally managed to drive a 997.2 C2S in maximum attack mode and Jesus Christ where has it been all my life.

It was absolutely phenomenal and made my much loved Cayman feel a bit naff. I'm amazed at how different it was and the entire performance/handling was off the scale.

The particular car had PDK with sport chrono and although I am very impressed with the box from a technical point of view I just don't know if I can commit to an automatic for a daily driver, even if I did enjoy it in maximum attack mode.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

I am driving a 997.1 Turbo as a daily,all weathers,12K per year with an M25 commute.

It is a tiptronic,I drive it on the buttons with the sport button engaged.
I would not swap it for a manual- the only upgrade for my needs would be PDK.

They're good aren't they.

And yes, get the PDK. In the 997 it makes the car easier to drive daily but the car doesn't become boring because of it.

I like the 997 a lot but the 997.2 is brilliant.

I've had PDK in Boxsters/Caymans and not liked it, but I think with 385bhp you can actually get enough fun from the sheer acceleration rather than just the interaction.

Also there are plenty of horror stories about the manual box in the 997, maybe the PDK is more reliable?

Does anyone know what the differences are between the PDK in the 997 compared to that in the 981? I found the latter one very annoying, everything from the theatrical down shift blip to the economy shifts to the sport plus 'kick' which seems far better turned in the 997.

I cannot comment about the 981, but I can the 991. The 997 doesn't do some of the stuff the 991 does, for example the throttle blip. It also doesn't seem to try to keep the car in as high a gear as the 991.

The 991s I had seemed awfully flat when in normal mode, because the 'box was keeping the revs as low as possible. It made the car very dim-witted and boring. Whilst the 997 obviously does keep the car economical in normal mode, it still seems more responsive than the 991.

The 991 does shift quicker than the 987 when in Sport / Sport plus mode though, in my estimation.

Don't get a PDK car if you enjoy driving and are any good at it. You'll get bored to death and fail to bond with the car. Acceleration gets 'normal' very quickly indeed, and it's the interaction that keeps the car fun. PDK in the 987 and 997 also chooses insanely high gears, which means that you have to drive it in 'manual' mode anyway.

Autos are great if you have an M25 commute, but they are certainly not fun.

Funny how PDK divides opinion - using my 997GTS in manual Sport mode is exactly why I like it. Much better than the clunky manual I tried, it suits the GTS motor a treat! Oh... it also allows you to put it in auto mode when you can't be ar*sed!!

Spot on. End of the day its each to their own. I have had both and like both. I dont find my PDK GTS any less fun at all. I guess Ferrari 458's and all the McLarens are all dull and like playing X-box too. Just seems strange that with a 911 a dual clutch box seems a no no and totally takes away any fun or involvement - just to clarify I said totally because some believe it kills the whole experience.

Yup... I have a quickshifter on my Tuono V4 and that works for me too (along with all the other gadgets that is supposed to dilute the experience) - it's ballistic and makes the GTS feel pedestrian!

The thing is what if I buy the PDK and get bored within 5 minutes? I'd have to unload the car quickly because it would annoy me and I'd take a huge hit.

Far better to play it safe and buy a manual, plus footwork is very good and would hate for it to go to waste smile

Also when I was out hooning it was 5*c and wet, and traction was incredible. Pretty sure that in 98% of circumstances it renders the 4S null and void.

OPC Sutton Coldfield have a 991S 2011 PDK with 30,000 miles for £52,998 (with decent spec). Looks like it might be too good to be true...but if it isn't then you get get a v nice car and £2k change.

A 991S only £2k cheaper than the 997 GTS and it's the same year? It would want to be a LOT cheaper than that for me to choose the 991.

There is also the small matter that some of the early 991s weren't that well put together, whereas Porsche had become pretty good at the 997 after 7 years of manufacture.

A very different car, too. The 991 is better in some respects and worse in others. It is by no means easy to guess which of the cars will be better for any particular individual's wants and needs.
