I was hoping the GT4 would have a high revving, zingy engine (like the 991 GT3 but with better sound) plus short gearing and everything else just as it is. There's a market for an RS with just such a set-up IMO.
We need someone with a bit of a mental streak and deep pockets to buy a cat D GT4 when on eventually appears and stick a tuned 3.4 from ehresmann or similar in it along with a shorter final drive that lasts more than 100 miles. That would be very special.

What's the story/truth behind the GT4 air intake restrictors ? Anyone removed or replaced them ?

The GT4 is an immense car but the gearing is a travesty. A shorter diff alone would give it markedly batter acceleration and make it more enjoyable.

Is that based on driving the car.......or reading magazines and forums?

Last week I was at a tour of a shop that has done a lot of GT4 tuning and they said specifically that there are no restrictions on the air intakes.

2 things for me.

Gearing is great - no issue at all if you've driven one. Felt no different to my 997 gt3 and I have never driven the car and felt it was a problem.

It's fast. I can't see why you'd want anything faster as a road car (and it is a road car) It feels a touch quicker than my GT3 did, and it's not really run in yet. It's a very quick car on twisty roads.

Running the engine in so I'm not taking it to the redline ,but from memory of the pec day the engine does take on an extra sense of urgency at the top end,not sure where this concept that it's all low down pull comes from.
The engine feels much better in the gt4 than in any of the numerous carrera s models I have driven ,which to me felt a bit weak low down.
It is so composed that I do think the car feels slower than it is.

is it fast enough..yes ,does it feel fast if you have come from a 550bhp beast...no.

You see, I don't get this at all. My 996.2 GT3 does 82mph in second gear.

I can't think of a single review of a 996 GT3 that complains about the gearing.

The gearing in the GT4 is fine. A complete none issue to me.

The gt4 has the same on paper performance as a 997.1 gt3 or pretty damn near ,the gt3 has similar speed in first and second gears but a higher 3rd.
In the past has anyone said the 997.1 gt3 is not quick enough or complained the gearing is too tall...................

One of my reasons for selling my GT3 was the gearing. Fine on track, daft on the road. Especially when it's an engine that begs to be revved out

See above. Frankly, when the first GT3s came out people considered them primarily track cars from what I can recall. Nowadays we expect to be able to use them in the road too.

Drove mine to Waitrose the other day. Seemed fine.

The. Gt4 has the same gearing as the road going cgts yet again no one moans as much about the long gearing also the CR/spyder before it but slightly slower in gear speeds due to smaller wheels
The moaning of the long gearing on forums seems to only apply to the gt4 most likely as there is nothing else to complain about!

My old 3.4L engine is at Jens' place so you can have it for a reasonable price. I'm looking now at 4.0L conversion of my 3.8L

I prefer the engine in my GT4 to the Mezger in my old 997.2 GT3....

... There I said it!

Gearing is fine but yes wouldn't mind a slightly lower 2 and 3rd...

Incedently you don't read of many complaints of the "long gearing" in the. 981 Spyder either

Yes but the Spyder and its ilk are cars to enjoy the journey. The GT4 is a car to enjoy the drive, different proposition.

Interesting point about the gearing on 996GT3 being almost the same. I cannot remember that far back but I think the reward for keeping the old Mezger lump in the higher rev range was much greater than the GT4 lump thus adding to the entertainment and interactivity.
It's a fair point that quibbling about the gearing is a fairly minor point in a lovely car, and yes it's not a "slow" car but it's frustrating that it could be that little bit better! rolleyes means we will all rush out and buy the next one.
