thumbup Good post - and you've hit my dilemma on the head as to why I'm struggling to choose between them.
I guess one question is ; have you got an option on a slot for either - if not , the cost to own differential would be substantial - if this is the case it's another reason to go for the Spyder - if not , I can't help you , sorry smile

I got my Spyder a week ago. Have done a thousand miles already! It's ace. Much better than I expected. It's plenty quick enough for UK country roads and the narrow tyres (compared to GT4) really allow the 3.8 torque to express itself. It sounds mega too.

I love the honest simplicity of the concept - listening to others it sounds like I won't be disappointed
very honest and simple this ......

electric steering
Porsche torque vectoring
PSM
Active engine mounts
Auto blip
Fake exhaust sounds.
electric hand brake

nothing wrong with the car as the GT4 has all that also, but you cannot say "I love the honest simplicity of the concept " lol

you mean it has a clutch :-)

have people gone mad ?

last of a line n.a engine as the next gen will probably be a turbo as it is a non G T car.
I think this is a very astute point. Given the 4 success there will certainty be another na version in the future

I absolutely can and I did - please don't tell me what I can and can't say on a public forum - especially when a huge amount of what you say is highly inflammatory and sometimes aggressive and rude. You obviously have a fair amount of technical knoledge and experience , why not use it to support and inform in a less aggressive way ? (Btw putting a smiley face after the comment doesn't help - my response is based on reading so many of your posts over a long period of time and in truth , it isn't really aimed at this one comment)

I wasn't referring to mechanical simplicity - I am not a good enough driver for these advances to cloud my driving experience - don't get me wrong , I love mechanical honesty - I have old air cooled cars and really enjoy driving them , I also have a 991 RS and really enjoy driving this too - they are both amazing experiences , but different experiences . It's about what you want the car to do - they all offer different approaches - there is no right or wrong in respect to these types of questions.

FWIW , I was referring to the simplicity of a manual box , no roof , a lovely exhaust note , pottering along on a Sunday morning on a lovely county A road - it sounds like fun to me .

Yes, for both.

You raise a good point about the tyres. My previous 997.2 GTS4 felt overtyred with the amount of mechanical grip and relative lack of torque it offered. Then my 997.2 Turbo S solved that issue, but it introduced a new problem that revealed itself over time and was a reason I got bored with Porsches: it was simply too fast for the public road before it became exciting enough to hold your attention (and the BIB!). By the time I sold it earlier this year, it was merely a form of transport; and driving the 7.2 TurboS at 3/10ths offers as much interest as driving a Mondeo.

The Spyder and GT4 appeal because I think 400hp, 2wd, and upto-300 section tyres is about the optimum you can realistically enjoy on the public road and have proper fun in without needing to break 150mph for thrills. We've seen this formula used to great effect by some great cars in the past. It is too easy to have too much power, and Porsche are to be lauded for restraint on the Gt4/Spyder power outputs.

About a dozen years since the 996GT3 started cleaning up E/COTY awards, it's telling that the same simple basic formula still wins despite the enormous advances in power outputs and chassis electrickery in the latest 2015 cars.

Yes, for both.
Why don't you buy both and see which one you like after 3 months. Its highly likely you will not loose anything on either?

This might be a stupid question as the Spyder hasn't really been on my radar, can you actually get one or does it have the same unicorn status as the GT4?

As a biker I'd go for the open-topped option every time. Driving a coupe, no matter how fast, has always felt like an incomplete experience to me, but I'm aware that many others feel differently.

Why not? Good value relative to the GT4 although admittedly the worst time to be selling a cab.

Seem to recollect you were saying similar thing about the GT3......before it went ballistic....biggrin:

He'll have change his name again. What about "Permanent a Wave TT"?
At this rate he will have had more names than Cheryl Tweedy / Cole / Vasina....
