Sorry fellow, we are going to have to agree to disagree; RWS, Electric handbrake, forced induction, torque vectoring yadayada... aint the key attributes I look for in a car for getting my kicks. I can fully appreciate that this car is incredibly fast, has great lap times et cetera, but crucially for me Porsche is a car you buy with your heart and a car you buy for involvement. All the modern technological aids are designed to remove the involvement and in my books that just isn't cricket. To give you an idea of what I am talking about, take a look at the stupid lengths I am currently going through to reverse all these advancements in technology. To most I'm sure this is stupid, but there are a select few who still understand what I am trying to achieve
I'm not disagreeing with you on your choice or why you would choose it, I'm disagreeing with you on your put downs of people who may like it. Edited by Richie200 on Sunday 29th November 13:35
It's Not the car I'd pick either of the two by a long long way but I'm sure it's still good to drive a great alrounder and I'd rather have one than a 6 series, as such I appreciate it as a capable desirable car. Then again I'd probably rather have an f type over anything 911 up to a gt3 or rs for no other reason than just because.
You say for getting your kicks. I think you missed my point above about a car for different reasons, it's not a weekend toy it's more of a very accomished all rounded that you can still have fun in and looks good. Plus it's cheaper. People have health/age/ job/ family considerations and the Cabrera S might just suit their lifestyles better doesn't mean they just want new.
Would I like the choice of A simpler striped out 991 with manual gear box none of that electronic gubbins? Damn right I would.but I suppose the Cayman fits that slot bar the rear seats.
I'd drive a gt3 rs all week if I could but maybe when I'm a bit older I might want other things and I/ they can choose that if they wish with this car. It will never be a better car than a gt3rs but it might be a better car for them.
Doesn't make me a beard or a new is better fan boy. I've read your thread and aprreciate all you are doing and why. What I don't understand is why you can't understand other people don't want to get where they are going with a bad back and a headache all the time and that because they don't like what you like doesn't make them a different type of enthusias or that they just like new because well it's new. Just just want different things in life at this moment or they can't afford a GT3 rs which lets face it most of us can't.

You did read the title of the thread?
Btw I agree with everything you have written above, and as already mentioned I fully get why people want this latest car. I just feel the ethos of what the 911 is meant to be is being diluted with all this nonsense. I just hoped that Porsche could avoid going down this road with it's sportcar; after all there are the Panamera, Macan or Cayenne in the range.
ETA: Do think think 20 years ago people looking at buying a 911 looked at a 6 series as a viable alternative; as you mention, that is where we are today? Which for me at least clearly shows how much way has been lost with the 911.

I drove the 991.2 yesterday. In summary it has a lot of lowdown torque, from around 2000 rpm, and revs well to 7000. The steering feel and weight have been improved and the pdk is quicker. The sports chrono dial thingy works well especially the 'sport response' button. The exhaust note is…..different

Did you drive on a road or track? UK or abroad? Sounds different.....care elaborate please. Turbo induction noise? It was on the roads around Silverstone - while I was having my PEC day with the GT4 & RS. The car had the sports exhaust and it was still muted. Don't know what the standard exhaust would be like but every review I've read indicates the sports exhaust option is a must. It's been some time since I had a Porsche Turbo so I can't really compare but its obviously a lot different to the 991S I used to have. I think it'll make a good DD and will be faster more of the time, throttle response above 2500 was very good and more engaging than a 997.1 turbo

Doesn't sound like a ringing endorsement - I can't believe they've done this to the 911 ! Love to know how you found the 4 and the RS - a nice combo

I'd only managed a couple of hundred miles in both mine before the PEC day. The GT4 is beautifully balanced but easier to spin(/harder to correct) on the low friction surfaces. RS is just epic - best car I've ever driven. Even though both had Michelin on the RS had a lot more grip front and back - so the differing compounds definitely have an effect. My GT4 has Dunlops which seem to me to have better wet grip than the PEC car. I'm just about to sign up for the RS day at Oulton Park - can't waitLove to know how you found the 4 and the RS - a nice combo
Incidentally I went in my Wife's Boxster GTS which really is a sublime car for the money. Great feel and a rev hungry engine and fabulous exhaust !

How would you say it compared in engaging-ness (sorry) to the 991S? MagicRat said:

I found that with the 991.1 you had to ring the neck of it to make it come alive as the real action was at the top of the rev range. As its a DD sometimes you just don't want to do that. The 991.2 is eager far earlier in the rev range and I just found myself using more of the performance more of the time. The handling was also better and somewhat stiffer. A 991.2 and a GT4 would be the perfect pair!nick28 said:

Interesting opinion and clearly your experience/feelings sums up exactly why and for whom this new Porsche design philosophy was aimed. Have you tried driving any older pork recently; say in C2 manual format (964, 993, 996 or 997)? Be interesting to hear your thoughts on the matter.Gassing Station | Porsche General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
