It may not be a classic Jaguar yet, but I thought I'd ask on this forum as I mainly lurk here and occasionally post

For my brothers' 40th I've bought him a Jaguar XJ6 (X350) - it's in mint condition and low miles to replace his high mileage XJ - they're different colours

Plan is to give him the car this coming weekend (6th or 7th), in a nice, surprising, and memorable way - he has no idea but his wife knows and can help with any set up

Any interesting suggestions*?

Meet up somewhere for a nice lunch. Park the new one a little removed from his but so he can see it (presumably the new one is in significantly better nick?).

Switch the keys over lunch without him knowing.

When he goes outside, "his" keys will open the "wrong" car?

(You obviously need to arrive in both the Jag and your normal daily).

Are there any "car" places and weekend events near you?

Benz World at Brooklands, Goodwood, or even the Ace Café?

Do what they do on the TV shows, get it parked up before hand and go there for a morning coffee/snack and just see if you get a reaction from him when he sees it.

Once he says ooh, that's nice, or mine's better etc, just hand him the keys.

I'm sure it's a delightful thought and I'm sure this is well thought out and he'll love it...

...buuutt....

Am I the only one who would not want a car bought in this way? I really prefer to choose my own. I spend a huge amount of time in them so they've got to be right. Or would that be me being a selfish, insensitive and ungrateful tosser? Again.

I think he will come to adore the salmon pink leather interior, matt black wrap, and aftermarket chrome wheel arch trims....

My brothers' wife has seen it and says he will love it based on their conversations

Murph7355 - your suggestion sounds a good one

I hope you've included the dayglo green furry dice hanging from the rear view mirror.

All I can say to this is, wish you were my brother!

Just be careful. A few years ago a friend wanted to give his wife a sports car for her 40th. He subtly sounded her out on what she liked. She said a number of times, in response to subtle questioning, the little Mercedes convertible.

One Saturday morning, as they left the house, James pointed to a shiny new SLK parked in the road and said nonchalantly "What do you think?" "it's horrible" came the reply. Turns out that she'd muddled the SLK up with the Z4.....

Fluffy dice are a must in this situation.

OP, you are a lovely brother to your brother! Well done!

Engage your lucky brother in conversation about the car. Get him to look at it, and then say "oh look, here are some keys, aand, oh look, here is a logbook with your name filled in on the slip". I did this once when I bought my dad a Sunbeam Rapier pillarless coupe - a car that he had worked on as a young engineer at Rootes-Chrysler, and which he had always wanted to own (but could not afford at the time).

Is this not fraught with risk? If he's anything like me he'll start picking holes in it. Could be awkward.

Agree. I plan to reveal the car quickly to avoid discussion beforehand and potential for "that's horrible" comments. Don't want to put him / us in an awkward situation, though his wife says he'll adore it - it's just a lower mileage immaculate replacement for his current car

I was tempted to buy a blazer and cravat from a charity shop and hand them over with the keys. Might even see if I can get his 2 little ones in the rear seat

Wise advice

Or maybe in its natural habitat - a local golf club

This has 'potential to go horribly wrong' written all over it, I'm afraid...

Pointing out there can be pitfalls is hardly 'pathetic'.

You need to be VERY sure of the person you're buying something like this for. An example of it going wrong has already been posted in this very thread.

But do carry on showing your maturity and intelligence by simply telling anyone who posts an opinion you don't like to "fk off". rolleyes
