Difference in E46 320d & E46 320td engine

Hi folks

Hope you can help me. I currently own a November 2003 E46 320d Msport saloon150bhp model (6 speed), I have been offered a smashed March 2004 E46 320td compact 150 bhp model (6speed)

I was looking to know is there any differences in the engine or gearbox?
Would be good for spares if they were the same

Thanks for any help

Ben

Look it up on realoem, put the chassis numbers in and see.

I think they'll be the same. If you look up the short engine part no that should confirm it.

AFAIK they should be the same.

Just sort the swirl flaps!

I had a facelift 320td (04 plate) for 3 years - great car (until I recently discovered straight 6 petrol loveliness)!

Good luck!

Isn't it simply because the Compact has a 't' after it's spec like the Coupe has a 'c'.

Model that springs to mind is the 325 model compact is a 325ti, the coupe is a 325ci whereas the normal 3 series it's a 325i.

Again 320d, being 320cd in coupe and 320td in compact.

The 't' doesn't relate to Turbo, just a model designation.

You could be right. I have checked other parts on Real OEM for both and they giving all the same prices and codes so they must be same. The front suspension, starter, alternator and al identical.

E46 Compacts seem to be a bit of an oddity in the range, but as far as I can make out engine/gearbox-wise they are all the same.

So any 6-speed 320d/td seems to be the same mechanically which is good news for the OP, but a Sport will have better-shaped seats and Sport suspension.

Oddness came in other areas of the spec - all 6 cylinder Coupes (320,325/330) had electric seats with memory adjustment but not Sport seats or suspension in SEs, that was only standard on Sport models.

However all 325ti Compacts had Sport seats and suspension but full leather was still an option on all of them, and electric memory seats on Compacts were a (rare) option!

But then you could order a 325Ci SE with Sport seats in leather and/or Sport suspension, or a 325ti with full leather and/or memory seats!

I digressed a bit, but I would have thought fundamentally a 320d/320td 6 speed should be interchangeable!?

Good luck - E46s are great cars!

Thanks for reply Mr Tidy

The smashed E46 320td comes with black roof lining and M-Sport steering wheel, so I thought it was a Msport finish. I run a BMW vin decoder to check what extras came with the car. Both the E46's come with sports suspension settings. Is that not the m sport suspension? See images below of both car extras. Pic1: 320td, Pic2: 320d
