I'm prepared to believe that a Caterham or Elise could well be more fun on the road in the scheme of things, but for a DD or weekend away with the missus car they have much less appeal I'm sure.
The GT4 is a pretty good compromise I think, it is very good on track, and you can drive there and back in some comfort.
How do you rate the 981 Spyder vs the GT4 on the road ? I thought the rag top was more fun (just talking road here , not track) smile
Hi R, well I'd say Spyder 1 - GT4 0, on the road anyway.

I just feel that the Spyder feels sharper as regards engine response, quicker steering, and general handling on the road. It also sounds better for some reason IMO esp at lower revs, and this is not just down to being a soft top.
The GT4 basically to me feels quite refined compared to the Spyder, as does the previous 987 version in comparison.
On picking up the new Spyder I immediately thought WOW this is an angry car, on picking up the GT4 later I thought, where's the noise and throttle response gone !!

Don't get me wrong the GT4 is also a great car in it's own right, and I can still have a lot of fun in it on a nice quiet B road.
The GT4 is very impressive and fast on track for sure, no chance to compare it with the Spyder yet though.

You kind of need one of each wink

Hi sandy59 what you are finding with the 981 I also found to be true of the 987spyder v CR!
How would you have felt collecting and driving the spyder first before the Gt4?
What helps the 981 spyder on the road is the fabulous passive sports suspension and perhaps a little more flex in the chassis due to no roof, I have a dislike of pasm on any porsche and I much prefer a passive set up! But alas all the upper models seem to come with it has standard ever since the 997.1s and for me it's just something you live with and not really a short coming of the gt4! Out of interest how do you find the comparable fuel consumption or any owners of both?

MrD the caysters never come perfect out the box if so you would have never modded the 987 spyder (track days or for purely road use) you are also mentioned doing the same to the CR, alas the gt4 is no different and is still being held back although Porsche took a big step with the 981spyder/gt4 and what they both cost retail makes them absolute bargains!
The fact that the cars today are so capable if I was to sell the gt4 I would look for an older model say a manual 997.2 or 987.2s for road use! But for now I am happy with the gt4 for purely weekend fun car and for high days and holidays road use as I cant see me doing any track days anytime soon

compact size !! it feels big to me lol o well

as for top end, I was doing 145 banana's the other day, and tend to go above 100 banana's most days to even get the car to excite me.
esp as it does about 115mph in 3rd gear !

I am not sure how people are having so much fun in their GT4 at normal speeds, as some have said far far to capable on the road to have fun in.

I can only think people are happy to pootle about in a trophy car and that is the fun of them, to be seen in !

Because real fun on the road in a GT4 is prison speeds, even more so in the GT3's

Still a great car and I am happy to see loads on track days so at least a few ended up in the right hands.

I guess we are seeing a split review on what is fun by owners atm , same happened with ex GT3 owners buying the Cayman R and saying more fun, these top end GT cars only come alive on track or at crazy speed and I do mean crazy speeds.

My R is far more fun and slower, and that's still to fast for the road really !

Do you remotely understand the concept that these things are subjective? The car is small compared to my previous 'supercars',it is not fast in a straight line compared to my previous cars.
Your opinion is your opinion and you are entitled to it,it is not fact and others opinions are just as valid as yours even if they differ.

Why is it a 981 spyder can get this kind of mpg and a gt4 would not even get close?

I can get 25 mpg in my 981 Soyder if I'm driving it normally - average run of A , B and dual carriageway - maybe 25 or so miles. I must admit I thought that was quite good smile

Not sure that's any better than the GT4 really. Seen lots of talk about how crap the MPG is (it appears to be when used as intended I get an average over 1000 miles of 18.3) so took a baseline at 1300 miles.

I drove with light accelerator for 45 miles. Mostly at 75 ish dual carriageway way, coasted a bit when there were downhills etc to be fair but average journey speed of 62.7. It showed 32.4 mpg over 45 miles.

Similar driving style (same route) in my wife's 2015 1.8 Civic and it returns 46.6

What a waste of a GT4 / life though. Reverting to just filling it up when it needs fuel and playing the MPG game when in the gutless Civic.

Agree 100% never expected to see past 30 (won't again)

Don't recall ever getting more than 26 out of my evora and similar size engine (less power). So it's not that bad and the Spyder isn't really any / much better on fuel either I would suggest.

I went for a hoon around the block saturday night and average 14.6mpg and a few of those was on recently tar and gravelled otherwise i'd be 12mpg!.Much thirstier than my old 997cs which i find odd,i think i'll be chipping mine in due course for better breathing.I now drive mine with Pasm in sport all the time which i find brings the car alive although mine has PCCB,s which improves the ride imho, any thoughts on this?.

Not me I am based down in Taunton and the car is currently sat in the garage waiting for a new Dunlop Maxx race to arrive - f'ing puncture are 1400 miles. Repairable but as I take the kids in the car and have tyre insurance I am going to pay the extra time £140 and have a new one fitted.

I wish it was me cry can't wait to drive it again!

How you doing buddy?!

The ride is pretty good anyway to be honest, good enough to use as an every day car. Might have something to do with the helper springs etc but many comment on the quality of the ride. PCCB's probably makes it even better.
I'm averaging 21mpg after 3900 miles
