I have a lovely 996 that is not getting used during the week (London comute) and not too much on weekend because I go off mountain biking.

I currently use my crap car (1.1 metro) to got to the station and to go off mountain biking. I am looking to go further away and dont think the Metro will survive motor way speed.

I have been debating a Porsche bike rack but not sure if that will just trash the car.

Any opinions on the subject, has anyone used one, does it scratch the paint, do they hold the bikes very secure, is it easy to get bikes in and out, are the secure at speed?

I've got the full transport system for our car - takes 2 bikes. Not particularly cheap but does work!

Pretty swift way to move the bikes......

(Sorry no pics with the bikes!)

Yes, I carry 2 mountain bikes on my 996 using the porsche transport system however I use Thule bike carriers as they are far cheaper but you do need to file a small groove in the bars for each of the clamps as the porsche bars are slightly wider than most racks. The paintwork should not get marked in any way as the system mounts in captive threads under the four roof covers so no part of it touches any of your paintwork, it's really easy to fit once you get the hang of it 3-4 minutes on your own. As for speed, no problem, the only thing you are aware of is the extra wind noise of the bikes, 80-90 mph is OK (I would imagine)

And dont use multi storey car parks ! I know of two people that have driven in, heard the crash and knackered bikes and car (ok not 911s).

I'm interested as well - but have a 993...

The original Porsche roof racks for the 993 don't seem to be sold by Porsche any more - anyone got any ideas? Don't really want to fit any generic kit that might damage the car.

I've always found these people to be very helpful with bike carrier enquiries, suggest you give them a call. They do list a couple of options for 911's but I'd ring first to make sure !

Interested in speed comments. Porsche only rate the 996 rack to 70 MPH ? Fear over them ripping out prevents me using for skis (I am not a biker) What experience is there out ther of a board and skis on the standard 996 rack ?
