Porsche 911R Discussion Forum
Discussion
As we don't have a specific 911R thread (apart from one pointing to what else may be at Geneva), I thought it would be worth having one.
First details have been leaked, http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/porsche/911/94601/new...
What are general opinions? Do we think this will be a limited run 911 or similar to the Cayman R, a raid on the parts bin and available to all?
Can we see this car being the desired 911 in the range?

If they're talking about the 911R here then it's a strictly limited edition car:

if it was regular production I reckon it would be the perfect 'enthusiasts choice' car.

Shall I start a "I put an LOI in a year ago and the dealer says they've sold all their allocation and I can't have one" thread or will this thread suffice?
Cos I did, and I bet I don't get one. Cynical? Moi? Never.
I did the same however my dealer was good enough at the time to say don't bother we have already allocated them to our VIP customers and have a waiting list of VIP customers who were not fortunate to get an allocation!!!!Cos I did, and I bet I don't get one. Cynical? Moi? Never.
As per GT4 thread :
Interestingly Porsche launches it's lightweight and rare 991 R model without a sniff of extended leather or a deviated stitch in sight.... Oh the shame of a dark, plastic interior.
Oh wait, just maybe they know a thing or two about these things - but the average GT4 owner would have to turn it down as it looks awfully poverty spec

So diverting away from LOI's etc (I may reach out to my contact, see if I can have one ha), what makes this car so very special compared to a GT3RS? I always assume (wrongly!) that the 'R' of current generations is just Porsche's way of using up the parts bin!
There have already been two threads on the topic. The car is supposed to get a six speed manual instead of PDK-S, the RS engine and magnesium roof and allegedly a number of CF body parts to keep weight down. hondansx said:
Look forward to seeing it in Geneva on Friday, but to be fair it is just a GT3 without the rear wing so not much to see!
To be fair, that's not accurate at all.If the rumours are to be believed:
- 6-speed manual gearbox
- Updated engine
Which for many people will make a massive difference!
However, if the rumours around the GT3.2 are to be believed, this will also have the same gearbox as an option, so not clear what the 'R" offers above the GT3.2, particularly when you actually might have half a chance of getting a GT3.2...

I think he was saying in terms of looking at it, it will look similar, not that there isn't much different under the skin.If the rumours are to be believed:

My mistake. in that case Hondansx, please accept my apologies. I see you were referring to appearance only.I'm assuming they've done a lot of aero work to compensate for the removed wing?!

I doubt that; it's not like a Carrera is unstable or performs badly on track. It would have a natural tendency to understeer with the GT3 front but balance can be fixed with suspension tweaks.
I am surprised they didn't use the duck tail spoiler from the parts bin, but you could argue from a design point of view it is 'purer' to have nothing and from a hierachy point of view, it would lose a few tenths at every big corner on a track versus a GT3.

If the rumours are to believed there will be the new engine in the .2 GT3 with a manual option then you're getting 8/10ths of the R for normalish money and stand half a chance of getting one!

Surely if it has the extra downforce from the GT3 front, without the extra downforce at the rear, it will be more likely to oversteer compared to the GT3 (or have I misunderstood your point - again?!).gbrown2014 said:
If the gen 2 gt3 is manual, doesn't that take away most of the appeal of this car?
Porsche wouldn't career as they have already sold every 911R they plan to make.CH's take on this (I think he has a point)
