Looks lovely but I'm a bit disappointed about the weight. It's what, 50kg lighter than a GT3? 20 or so of that is ditching the PDK, so they've actually shaved 30kg in reality. If Richie200 on here creating his 996R can take 200kg+ out of his 996.1 C2 and still have it everyday useable with 4 seats, I'm not quite sure what Porsche were doing frown
Just to clarify my above point, I am 99% sure that this will be the best sportscar available (in theory!) to buy bar none regardless of price and Ferrari/McL/Lambo etc offerings. I'll forgive it the weight, even though it does seem like a missed opportunity to really go to town. It's just such a crying shame regular 911/Cayster owners will never get near it at even vaguely sensible money.

My only hope is that Porsche start a general R line of cars (like GTS is a line) in the next gens that aren't limited number. In Evo's vid AP said that if the public want is there for this type of car, they will build them. I'd be all over that 991R if a version was available in NB, 3.8 powerkit form with cheaper steel brakes and X71-type suspension for Carrera GTS money. And there would still be a massive margin in it for them.

It's getting to the point where there's got to be a decent percentage of Porsche Cayster/911 buyers who just want something that they're not making (in sufficient numbers) anymore.

I'm not in the market for one, so for me it's all academic.

But if production is low, with limited access to ownership, then what's the point of it?

These cars will be acquired by a few privileged people, in most cases as a commodity - not to be used, but for the token 'investment' potential or gratification of 'ownership'.

Actually driving them, adding miles, getting them dirty and picking up the scars of usage, which was what the 911 used to all about, just won't happen.

Build enough at the right price, and Porsche will please more customers, presumably make a nice profit, and they're more likely to be used as intended.

Its all about building the brand and high end PR. Look at the exposure this car is getting.

What they are really trying to achieve is high sales of Macans and Cayennes...

Fair enough - I was just reading the press release.

However, if the first car is 000/911, doesn't that make it 912 cars...?!
no, 000 cars are the pre production factory cars.

The crying shame of it is they normally get crushed after they have done their bit frown This one may end up in the museum hopefully!

I do fancy this 911R, BETTER steering again and the 6 speed short ratio's

Must upset 98% of PH users, as every one likes the GT3 steering and long ratio's !! where I have been asking for short ratio's and better steering feel and getting slagged off every time as ask for it !
CBA to look it up but you seem to know, how short is 'short' this time round? Better steering feel how or have they gone back to hydraulics?

I'm not sure they have to go back to hydraulics for better steering feel, I think the steering feel in the 991 RS is pretty sublime, and I would go as far as saying on a par or even better than my previous 997 GT3 (non RS).
It's only the assistance after all that changed, still a direct link from the wheel to the rack as I understand ??

It certainly is a more than ridiculous situation. This forum is full of people desiring a car in this mould.
An R line would definitely sell. Just because I can't buy an R isn't going to mean I'll buy a Macan or a turbo Carrera.

Only got a bare contract to sign in order to get things rolling. Did not see any options list yet. Colour choices white or GT silver, stripes red or green is what is confirmed as well as the optional single mass flywheel and 918 seets in brown wiht houndstooth cloth inserts. PCCB is standard.
Can't wait to learn more
Glad to read that the Motorsport dept have had a lot of input. Having them onboard the design is significant imho.

This just makes it harder to take as I could actually buy one......

At 200k it would have been out of my reach.... Any perspective 918 owners out there that would like to gift me their allocation I will be forever grateful!!!!

unfortunately i look too poor (and probably sound it if you go by my grammar) so havent driven the new iterations of electric steering (had a few hours in the latest boxster) so cant comment on hydraulics vs electric and was only going by what 'forum experts' hinted at.

How are the ratio's different on the 911R though?

I'm 22 years old, still at University getting my BsC in Business Management, and I already know by the time I get a job earning (hopefully) decent money these will have already gained 100% of their original value. Can anyone give a rational reason why they can't make more of these like the GT3 and RS variants? Regardless its got a very tasty looking specification list! Well done to anyone that does secure a slot, please remember to post here asap as I'm sure I'm not the only one that will want to be able to live vicariously through the power of the internet! biggrin

You cannot deny there is a halo effect.

£136k though...bravo Porsche for making every other supercar look so expensive. What a shame we can't take advantage of it.

Just watched the evo video..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRxbgACxlec It's all bullst isn't it?

They make a proper 911 with 500HP and a manual gearbox and they only make 3 of them!!!!

The funny thing is, out of all the people who will get to buy one, I would guess most of them would option a PDK if it was available!

fk off Porsche!
fk off with your stty Cayennes and Turbo flat 4's
fk off with your st letter of intent system
fk off with your continual program of building great cars ...... but only making 5 of them!!!!!

Tossers!
It's like you've just read my mind and voiced it for all to see......

hehe

I'd happily sign a petition letter which was worded along these lines (maybe being a little more 'selective' with the language used biggrin), its frustrating to say the least.
