So I have purchased two 991s in the last couple of months, trading the first in for the second. The first was a manual Carrera which, lovely as it was, as a London car wasn't right for me. Anyway I traded it in for a similar age and mileage 'S' PDK.

Both cars were from different OPCs - handover number 1 was amazing, photos offered, car under a cover, toys in a bag for the kids, presentation case for keys (fobs coloured to match car) and photo frame etc. Handover number 2 was pretty much 'here are the keys, off you go' - car outside, no effort made to make me feel 'special' having spent a lot of money on a car...

What's the norm, what are people's experiences with this?

Cool first world problem to have bro, vote with your feet and buy from the dealer that made you feel special if that's what is important to you. I would buy the best car at any one time and not really care about having my ass wiped, but that's just me.

There is no need to be like that.

Very helpful and inciteful - I knew there was a reason I was still a member of PH

Had I gone to collect a car and the first scenario had happened, I think I would've puked.

A dealer might only 'touch' a customer a couple of times during the purchase of a car and it amazes me how some miss the importance of the handover experience. I know several people who have switched dealers just because of this.

Reminds me of a focus group I ran for Audi many years ago where this question was asked,

Chap 1, "I bought a BMW and got a bunch of flowers"
Chap 2, "I bought a Porsche and got a model of my car"
Chap 3, "I bought a Ford and got forgotten"......

Yes it was cringey and I refused both photo and video but at least they made an effort - i think there's a happy medium in there somewhere

Be like what?

I started with a light joke, told the OP to vote with his feet and buy from the dealer that pulled out the stops for him in future, and said that I care more about the car I'm buying (condition/spec/price) than if it's got a cover on it (wtf) a white bow on the bonnet and a red carpet leading up to it.

Don't see what the issue is? What better advice do you want?

Just looking at your car history I believe you have had a total of 9 Porsches in the past, what exactly do you want to get from PH on this? You have plenty of experience buying Porsches so should know the drill by now?!?!?

everyone is a bit touchy, relax - it's the end of the week, long bank holiday to enjoy, be happy you have a Porka on the driveway and get out in it this weekend without worrying about the buying "experience", deviating stitching etc... and live life a little eh?

Would it have helped if I put loads of childish smilies on my first post? I think you ladies have interpreted it wrong, it was supposed to be written half in jest, so put your handbags away and chill.

I used to love handing over cars . I was usually as excited as the customers were. It is also a time when you can cement a bond between you and them. For a lot of people buying a new (or used) vehicle is a big deal for them, something that they do not do that often. If the sales person can just go that little extra mile chances are he will see them again for a future purchase. When I collected at an agreed time my GT3 and subsequent RS they were under cover inside the showroom by the door cleaned to perfection with a tank of fuel. Before we left Amanda was presented with a really nice bouquet and we were waved off by the DP the SM and Emma my salesperson. Perfect I felt special! Totally professional with no unnecessary trinkets other than a Porche jacket that I had blagged!! Friend of mine went to collect his new F.type, salesman gave him his keys and told him it was parked up the side of the showroom and that there were some flowers in the boot!!!

Had the treatment at OPC Reading buying a 5 year old C4S, really uncomfortable with the photo, I dare say I must have looked the unhappiest person buying a 911 ever..

Last purchase...

Told salesman repeatedly what day I was coming up having heard car was ready.

Turned up. 'What you doing here, I wasn't expecting you'.

No, nice touches. (i.e good customer service)

Handed a key.. 'sorry, run out of Porsche keyrings. I'll post you them'... never did.

Thanks.. Can I get out of here with my car now please. Sorry for bothering you.

Never understood why the local garage doesn't have a dedicated collection area whether it is a VW, Audi, Porsche, Aston Martin, Bentley being collected. With quick change company logos, pictures for the walls. Just a bit of effort, and leaves a good impression to tempt people back. Just lazy service.

All I want is knowledgeable and helpful sales person, any unnecessary faffing during any part of the buying process is just annoying.

Car parked out front so its easy and quick to leave, keys and papers at the ready and a full tank of fuel. Perfect.

My experience when I collected my car was very similar to your first handover, I was given a bottle of champers, Porsche coat, extra PEC experience and a few other little bits.

As an experience was far beyond what I was expecting and I will be going back there for my next car.

When I picked up my used 997 GTS recently....I changed the time I was picking the car up at the last minute as my seven year old son wanted to come too. Knowing this the salesman made the effort to include him in the process...sign beside the car in the showroom has his name on it too...gave him a cap and he now has the photo of him and his Dad collecting his Porsche in his bedroom.

I'd have cringed at having the photo if it was just me though!

That said you can only really judge on how much a dealership values your custom when something goes wrong.

Very different process to when we bought my wife's brand new (and very expensive) Mini recently...car was left outside in the pouring rain, one of the alloy's was damaged "we'll repair it sir....no you won't you'll replace it"...and that was after we'd heard nothing in the month before we'd collected it. When I rang them to ask when the car would be ready "Oh it arrived yesterday"

Was meant to collect my Porsche on a Thursday , bit of a hiccup at work meant that wasn't going to happen , rang him and told him I'd collect it Friday.

Friday came and had been booked to play in a charity golf day , rang the salesman up and asked him to drop it off at home anytime that afternoon which he willingly did.

No flowers, photos , nowt.

Wasn't expecting a thing , so no disappointment on my behalf.

I find they vary. Bolton seemed to make it an occasion, Guildford and Cambridge more basic.
