Hi,

First time posting on the forums. I've been looking out for a Gen 2 Cayman for the last couple of months and now I'm ready to buy. My budget is around £25k so my choice is between a high specced Cayman or low specced Cayman S, haven't quite made my mind up on that bit yet.

Regardless, there's one thing playing on my mind. With the new '4th' gen Cayman coming out next month, would now be a bad time to buy? Do we expect there to be a tumble in the prices of the previous generation Caymans when the new one is released?

This will be my first Porsche so I'm not so experienced in how the market maneuvers yet.

Thanks in advance,

stebbo

I don't think anyone really knows. 981 prices are high at the moment, for the GTS in particular, because the 781 has received a mixed reaction and there a good number of potential buyers who don't want a turbo 4. To put that in context the dealer prices of 981Ss like mine (nearly 3 years old) are about or probably above the level I paid for mine 18 months ago. 781 prices are, from what people say, are at list with nothing in the way of discounts. It will take a few months for the market to settle. I'd like 981 prices to stay high (obviously) but I'm not convinced they will UNLESS the 781 is a bit of a flop - and I'm not convinced that will be the case.

It took me over a year of looking for Gen 2 Cayman S I missed a number of good opportunities deliberating over whether it was right or not, as well as having to wait for what I wanted.
They are out there but Gen 2 are quite well sought after (particularly in your price range)
Don't rush it, but be prepared to act when you spot the one you want.
I contemplated the Cayman but went for the S in the end. The wait was worth it.
To summarise with a Cayman (price wise) I do not believe there is a right or wrong time to buy.
Good luck with your search and most of all enjoy the Cayman whichever you decide on - they are great cars in any format.

That's the main problem, I'm getting really impatient after looking for a couple of months now, but I also fear rushing in on the wrong car. Hopefully I'll just know when everything feels right smile

If anything it's a good time to buy as the mixed reviews of the 718 may mean the 987 prices will hold. It's certainly not a bad time to buy. I think you could get a S if you're patient and willing to buy privately. Generally speaking these cars hold their value well, in 18 months I've not noticed a significant drop in Gen 2 prices. I'm on my second gen 2 S and spent probably over 8 months altogether looking for the right one, in that time I saw a few 25K cars that looked good, if you're in a rush you may need to stretch to 27K if you want a low mileage high spec one.

I'm sure you'll love it whichever Cayman you get. Good luck!

On the contrary, I'd say after owning a 911 is a good time to buy one and appreciate what it brings to the party. wink
